Cycling is gaining stronger momentum in Marikina City as thousands more residents turn to bicycles for everyday mobility, prompting the local government to further strengthen programs and facilities supporting the city’s biking community.
Data from the Marikina City Bikeways Office showed that the number of cyclists recorded through its Bike Count reached 29,245 this year, a 157-percent increase from 11,363 in 2025. The figures represent an additional 17,882 cyclists in just one year.
The Bike Count is conducted to measure cycling activity across the city and provide information that can guide improvements to Marikina’s active mobility network.
During a broader seven-day monitoring period, the Bikeways Office recorded 67,428 cyclists, highlighting the significant role bicycles continue to play in transportation across the city.
Mayor Maan Teodoro said the growing numbers indicate that local initiatives promoting safer and more orderly cycling are producing encouraging results.
“Ang mga numerong ito ay positibong indikasyon na nagbubunga ang ating mga pagkilos at mga programa na nagsusulong ng mas ligtas at maayos na pagbibisikleta,” Teodoro said.
She assured residents that the city government would continue improving cycling programs and infrastructure to make bicycle travel safer and more convenient.
Among the city’s ongoing efforts is the regular cleaning and maintenance of bike lanes. The Marikina City Bikeways Office removes leaves, moss, and other obstructions that could affect cyclists using designated routes.
Marikina is also developing the Active Transport Park in Barangay Marikina Heights. The facility is planned to accommodate bicycles and BMX bikes, skateboards, roller skates, rollerblades, and other non-motorized scooters.
It will also function as an end-of-trip facility for cyclists, offering restrooms, designated stall areas, and spaces for different recreational activities.
Meanwhile, bike racks are being installed in schools to provide students who cycle to class with safer and more organized parking.
With cycling numbers continuing to rise, Marikina is expanding its active mobility infrastructure to keep pace with residents increasingly choosing two wheels for transportation, recreation, and everyday travel.
