Caring for OFWs: Sun Life Introduces Comprehensive Health Protection

For many Filipinos, good health is the foundation of a bright future. It allows them to chase their dreams, support their loved ones, and enjoy life to the fullest. However, an illness can change everything—disrupting plans, straining finances, and even affecting one’s ability to work.

This is especially true for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), who leave home to provide for their families. Beyond financial pressures, they also face the challenges of being in a foreign land, adapting to new cultures, and dealing with homesickness. If they fall ill, it could mean losing their job or being forced to return home prematurely—putting their family’s dreams, such as building a home or starting a business, at risk.

Understanding the challenges faced by OFWs, Sun Life Philippines took action.

Introducing Sun Life OFW Health Protect

Many OFWs lack healthcare coverage when they return home, whether for a vacation or after their employment contract ends. This is a significant gap that we wanted to address,” said Cary Casipit, Client Segment Marketing Head at Sun Life Philippines.

In response, Sun Life launched Sun Life OFW Health Protect, a life insurance and health protection plan tailored to the unique needs of Overseas Filipinos.

This plan provides continuous health coverage—from prevention and diagnosis to treatment and recovery—up to the age of 100.

• Preventive Care: OFWs can proactively manage their health through annual physical exams, vaccinations, or teleconsultations, available from the second policy year until the sixth year.

• Critical Illness Coverage: If diagnosed with any of over 100 covered critical illnesses, policyholders receive a lump sum cash benefit to assist with treatment costs.

• Cancer Booster Benefit: Additional financial support is available for specific cancer conditions, covering hospitalization, follow-up care, and home recovery.

• Retirement Benefit: Starting at age 65, policyholders can receive 5% of the policy’s face amount annually for eight years, ensuring they have funds to enjoy their retirement once they return home for good.

A Commitment to OFWs’ Well-being

“As OFWs dedicate themselves to providing for their families, Sun Life is committed to taking care of them in return,” Casipit said. “Through Sun Life OFW Health Protect, we hope to empower them to stay healthy while securing their future and achieving their dreams.”

Important Notice: Sun Life solutions for Overseas Filipino clients can be availed only while they are physically present in the Philippines.
