Lights Off, Action On: SM Supermalls Joins Earth Hour 2025

A Unified Stand for the Planet

SM Seaside City Cebu and the 86 SM Supermalls nationwide give an hour for Earth by turning off non-essential lights during Earth Hour 2025.

For the 17th year in a row, SM Supermalls reaffirmed its dedication to environmental conservation by actively participating in Earth Hour 2025, a worldwide initiative led by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). This movement symbolizes a collective effort to combat climate change and promote sustainability.

A Powerful Hour of Change

On March 22, from 8:30 to 9:30 pm, SM malls nationwide joined the global movement by switching off non-essential lights. Customers, tenants, and employees were encouraged to “Give an Hour for Earth” by engaging in meaningful actions that contribute to environmental preservation.

The Impact of Collective Action

The one-hour power-down was not just symbolic—it led to tangible energy savings. According to PwC Isla Lipana and Co., the collective effort of 87 SM malls resulted in power savings equivalent to charging 319,759 smartphones or recycling 1.4 tons of waste. This proves that even small actions, when done together, can lead to significant environmental benefits.

A Night of Sustainability and Community

Beyond switching off the lights, SM Supermalls transformed Earth Hour into an engaging experience for shoppers. Various eco-friendly activities such as live music, arts and crafts, and fitness events encouraged people to connect with nature while promoting sustainable living. It was a night of awareness, relaxation, and purpose.

A Commitment That Goes Beyond an Hour

Earth Hour is just one of the many sustainability initiatives led by SM Cares. Programs such as the Trash to Cash recycling market, Plastic Waste Collection, and E-Waste Collection encourage responsible waste management. Additionally, the annual International Coastal Cleanup mobilizes thousands of volunteers to protect the country’s shorelines.

Inspiring Future Climate Leaders

This year, SM Supermalls partnered with students from National University and Asia Pacific College to create a digital campaign highlighting the importance of disconnecting from screens and reconnecting with nature. This initiative aims to inspire young individuals to become advocates for environmental sustainability.

A Call for Everyday Action

SM Supermalls reminds everyone that sustainability does not end with Earth Hour. Small daily choices—such as reducing plastic use, conserving water, and supporting eco-friendly initiatives—can lead to lasting positive change for the planet.
