Filipino rum heritage takes center stage as Tanduay equips aspiring bartenders and hospitality professionals with practical skills, industry knowledge, and responsible beverage service.
For generations, Tanduay has been part of Filipino celebrations, building a reputation as one of the country’s most recognizable rum brands. Today, the company is extending its legacy beyond producing spirits by helping develop the next generation of professionals in the hospitality, tourism, and beverage industries.
Through its Tanduay Rum Masterclass, the brand is bringing industry knowledge directly to classrooms, providing students with valuable exposure to bartending techniques, rum craftsmanship, and responsible beverage service.
The latest session was conducted at the University of Perpetual Help in Las Piñas, gathering more than 100 first- and second-year students pursuing careers in hospitality and beverage management.

Led by Tanduay resident bartender Jake Alano, alongside the Band of Young and Outstanding Bartenders (BYOB) and Soilo Productions, the program introduced participants to essential bartending skills, cocktail preparation, and the distinctive characteristics of rum.
According to Tanduay Brand Manager Gem Leonard Boy, investing in education is an important part of strengthening the industry’s future.
“Tanduay is very active in building appreciation for rum through grassroots engagement and education,” Boy said, emphasizing that today’s students will eventually influence the development of bartending, hospitality, and tourism.
Bringing Industry Experience Into Classrooms
Launched in 2016, the educational initiative began with a session at the Eulogio Amang Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology in Manila.
Originally introduced as a basic Tanduay class, the program gradually developed into a comprehensive learning experience covering rum production, sensory evaluation, cocktail preparation, and flairtending.
Over the years, it has reached universities, training institutions, and hospitality organizations across Metro Manila, North and Central Luzon, CALABARZON, and the Bicol Region.

Alano shared that the team typically conducts masterclasses for at least three institutions monthly, expanding opportunities for aspiring beverage professionals to gain practical industry exposure.
The sessions explore how sugarcane, distillation, aging, and blending contribute to rum’s character. Participants also learn to distinguish aroma, color, body, flavor, and finish while developing cocktail-making techniques.
For Alano, who has spent 15 years in the industry, understanding the craftsmanship behind a spirit is essential to becoming a knowledgeable hospitality professional.
Product knowledge, he explained, enables future bartenders to communicate confidently with customers, recommend suitable beverages, and demonstrate creativity in cocktail preparation.

Promoting Professionalism and Responsible Service
Beyond technical skills, the masterclass emphasizes responsible alcohol service and the importance of observing legal drinking-age requirements.
Students are reminded that hospitality professionals have a responsibility to promote moderation and ensure that alcoholic beverages are served appropriately.
Tanduay also supports industry development through distillery tours, mixology competitions, flairtending activities, and other educational programs.
For the company, the masterclass represents more than brand promotion. It connects Filipino craftsmanship with professional development while preparing aspiring bartenders for real-world hospitality environments.
Ultimately, Tanduay hopes participants will carry their newfound knowledge, creativity, and appreciation for Filipino rum into their future careers, helping strengthen the country’s growing hospitality and beverage industry.
