Sony Expands Cinema Line with FX5

Sony has strengthened its professional imaging portfolio with the introduction of the FX5, a new full-frame cinema camera designed to meet the evolving needs of filmmakers, videographers, and content creators. Officially unveiled on July 22, 2026, the latest addition to Sony’s Cinema Line combines advanced imaging technology with a compact and lightweight design, making it suitable for productions ranging from documentaries and commercials to independent films and digital content.

Positioned between the FX3 and FX6, the FX5 is equipped with a newly developed 16.6-megapixel full-frame Exmor RS stacked CMOS sensor powered by the latest BIONZ XR2 image processor. Enhanced with AI-assisted processing, the camera delivers improved image quality and performance while supporting 5K Open Gate recording at up to 60 frames per second, giving creators greater flexibility when cropping or adapting footage for multiple formats during post-production.

One of the camera’s standout features is the introduction of internal 16-bit X-OCN RAW recording, marking the first time the capability has been integrated into Sony’s FX series. This enables filmmakers to capture high-quality RAW footage without relying on external recording devices. The FX5 also supports 4K recording at up to 120 fps and Full HD at up to 240 fps, providing smooth slow-motion footage for cinematic storytelling.

Sony also designed the FX5 to perform reliably in challenging lighting conditions. The camera features a triple-base ISO system with settings of 800, 4000, and 12800, combined with Dual Gain technology that delivers more than 15 stops of dynamic range. Professional features include dual CFexpress Type A/SD card slots, a 3.5-inch touchscreen monitor, a CineAlta-inspired user interface, and compatibility with optional accessories such as an XLR handle and an electronic viewfinder.

According to Sony, the FX5 is intended for professionals seeking a portable yet powerful cinema camera that complements higher-end models like the Burano and Venice 2, while remaining practical for handheld, run-and-gun, and mobile productions. The company expects the camera to begin shipping in August 2026, with additional capabilities, including 5K 120p Open Gate recording, scheduled to be introduced through a future firmware update.

Alongside the FX5 announcement, Sony also unveiled the Alpha 7R VI (α7R VI), the latest addition to its Alpha still camera lineup, featuring a new high-resolution sensor and enhanced AI-powered autofocus technology for photographers seeking improved imaging performance.
