SM Prime Strengthens Presence in China with New Xiamen Hotel

SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SM Prime) is reinforcing its long-term investment in China with the opening of its first hotel in the country, transforming its Xiamen development into a more integrated destination for business and leisure travelers.

The newly opened voco Xiamen SM City features 325 upscale guest rooms and is directly connected to SM Xiamen, the company’s pioneering development in China established 25 years ago. The RMB 450-million property expands SM Prime’s footprint in Xiamen by combining retail, hospitality, and lifestyle offerings within one accessible complex.

Strategically situated beside Wushipu Station on Metro Line 1, the hotel provides convenient access to major transportation hubs, including Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport and Xiamen Railway Station, both approximately 15 minutes away. This location makes it an attractive choice for international business visitors, domestic travelers, and tourists exploring the coastal city.

SM Prime President Jeffrey C. Lim said the opening represents an important milestone in the company’s operations in China.

“voco Xiamen SM City is our first hotel in China and it connects to SM City Xiamen, the first property we opened in the country 25 years ago,” Lim said. “With this investment, we are turning the complex into a complete lifestyle destination for tourists.”

Known as one of Fujian Province’s leading economic centers, Xiamen continues to attract visitors with its thriving maritime industry, cultural attractions, and vibrant dining scene. The city is home to the world’s 15th-largest container port, several UNESCO-recognized heritage sites, and Michelin-recognized restaurants, making it a popular destination for both business and leisure travel. Demand for short getaways and food-focused tourism, particularly among younger travelers, has also contributed to the city’s growing appeal.

The hotel’s opening comes as China continues to strengthen its tourism sector. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council’s 2026 Economic Impact Research report, the country’s tourism industry is projected to nearly double in value—from US$1.8 trillion in 2025 to US$3.5 trillion by 2036—highlighting strong long-term growth prospects.

Supporting this outlook, China’s State Council recently approved a five-year tourism development plan through 2030 aimed at enhancing tourism services, diversifying travel experiences, stimulating visitor spending, and expanding international cooperation.

By introducing its first hotel in China, SM Prime complements its established retail presence in Xiamen while positioning the development as a comprehensive destination where shopping, dining, accommodation, and travel experiences come together under one address.
