SM Foundation Breathes New Life Into Iloilo School

Family, staff, and the Assumption sisters filled ASEC’s newly restored chapel for the turnover mass. The renovation project reached nearly every corner of the campus.

Revitalized classrooms, modern learning facilities, and improved community spaces bring renewed hope and opportunities to students at Assumption Socio-Educational Center.

A school that has served generations of Filipino children in Iloilo City is beginning a new chapter following a major campus transformation made possible through the support of SM Foundation.

On September 16, 2026, the Foundation officially turned over the newly renovated Assumption Socio-Educational Center (ASEC) in Barrio Obrero, Iloilo City, marking another milestone in its commitment to improving educational facilities and creating better learning environments for underserved communities.

Since 1967, Assumption has welcomed generations of students. Today, its campus continues to evolve, offering more conducive and accessible spaces for every Assumption learner and educator.

Established in 1967, ASEC originally provided education to children whose families had been displaced by a devastating fire. Over the decades, the institution evolved into a center for academic learning, character development, and Catholic faith formation.

However, years of continuous use had left many campus buildings deteriorating. Damaged ceilings, termite-infested structures, aging windows, and outdated electrical systems presented challenges to both students and teachers.

For School Administrator Agnes Gatpatan, the renovation represented a long-awaited answer to the institution’s growing infrastructure concerns.

With limited financial resources and a mission centered on affordable education, undertaking major repairs had remained difficult.

Students enjoy a reading session in ASEC’s renovated library, one of the facilities improved through the project.

Every student at ASEC receives subsidized educational assistance, while approximately 70 percent benefit from full sponsorships provided by donors and institutional partners.

Many students come from hardworking families, including jeepney drivers, small business owners, and other ordinary Filipinos determined to provide their children with quality education.

Recognizing the school’s important community role, SM Foundation undertook extensive improvements across several campus facilities.

A kindergarten class turns a morning activity into a lively lesson in motion, showing what the expanded classroom now makes possible.

The rehabilitation covered two dormitories, the faculty building, audio-visual room, preschool classroom, library, covered gymnasium, Classroom Building 2, and Dalzon Building.

Beyond structural improvements, the project introduced spaces designed to support modern education and personal development.

The former registrar’s office was converted into a computer laboratory, providing students with opportunities to strengthen their digital skills and become more familiar with technology.

ASEC alumnus Jake Leonard Bautista walks his daughter to school before work. “Students now are very lucky because of this renovation. During our time, the school wasn’t like this. ASEC has significantly improved its facilities and is now truly beautiful.”

Meanwhile, the old canteen was transformed into a Reflection and Formation Center, supporting ASEC’s continuing commitment to spiritual growth and community engagement.

Renovated classrooms now offer brighter, more comfortable surroundings, while improved sanitation facilities provide a cleaner and safer environment for young learners.

Carmen Linda Atayde, SM Foundation Executive Director for Education Programs, emphasized the shared belief of the Foundation, ASEC, and Assumption alumni that education remains a powerful instrument for social progress.

She expressed hope that the improved facilities would inspire present and future students to pursue their ambitions and contribute positively to society.

For Gatpatan, the transformation exceeded expectations. What initially appeared to be a modest improvement project ultimately became an extensive campus renewal.

Students enter ASEC’s newly restored chapel before class, one of ten revitalized spaces made possible by this year’s renovation.

The refreshed buildings now feature the Assumption’s familiar blue-and-white colors, complemented by the gold uniforms worn by students.

More than a physical renovation, the project represents renewed possibilities for a school deeply rooted in community service.

Through initiatives like this, SM Foundation continues to demonstrate how meaningful investments in education can strengthen communities, empower young Filipinos, and help build brighter futures for generations to come.
