Feeding Hope: Akamegane Kitchen Brings Community Together in Navotas

In Navotas City, a simple coin dropped into a tin can is now fueling a movement that feeds both bodies and dreams. This is the spirit behind the Akamegane Kitchen Project, a collaboration between ACTION, Inc. (A Child’s Trust Is Ours to Nurture, Inc.), Lawson Philippines, and the Navotas City government, with the support of partners and advocates who believe in building brighter futures for children.

The project, launched at Tanza Elementary School, provides daily nutritious meals for 100 students until 2028, making it one of the most sustained feeding interventions in the city. To ensure long-term impact, three Navotas locals have been hired to run kitchen operations, turning the program into both a feeding initiative and a livelihood opportunity.

The name “Akamegane Kitchen” or “Red-Glasses Kitchen” reflects the advocacy of Japanese comedian and television personality Ryota Yamasato, known for his iconic red glasses and deep commitment to children’s welfare. As ambassador, Yamasato’s energy has helped rally support across borders — from Japan to the Philippines — proving that compassion is universal.

Marking its 10th year in the Philippines with over 217 convenience stores nationwide, Lawson celebrated the milestone not only with expansion but also with purpose. In July 2025, the company launched a store-wide donation drive, placing coin banks in more than 150 branches and releasing special Akamegane Kitchen-branded food boxes in partnership with BPI. Each small act — a coin, a purchase, a message shared — contributes directly to sustaining meals for children in Navotas.

During his visit to Manila, Yamasato joined Lawson executives led by Takuya Goto, Chief Finance Officer and Group Head of Merchandising and Marketing, and Hideki Ogawa, Senior Operations Manager, to personally engage with the program and thank Filipino supporters. Together with ACTION’s Founder and President Hajime Yokota, they emphasized that the Akamegane Kitchen is more than a project — it is a commitment to nurture children with dignity, health, and hope.

With every meal served, the Akamegane Kitchen sends a powerful reminder: small change can make a big difference.
