Every Day is Earth Day at SM Supermalls: 7 Ways They’re Leading the Green Movement

At SM Supermalls, sustainability isn’t a seasonal trend—it’s a daily habit. As Earth Day 2025 rolls around, SM is doubling down on its promise to put the planet first, turning everyday mall visits into opportunities for eco-conscious living. Through innovative technology, smart design, and strong community partnerships, SM is turning its vast network of malls into green oases that benefit both people and the planet.

As we work toward a more sustainable future, our malls serve as places where both communities and the environment can thrive,” said Engr. Liza Silerio, Vice President for Corporate Compliance and Program Director for SM Cares for Environment. “We want to make sustainability accessible—something everyone can take part in, every day.”

Here’s how SM Supermalls is bringing that vision to life, seven days a week:

1. Charge Up While You Shop

Electric vehicle owners, rejoice—charging your ride at SM is not only convenient, it’s free. With 123 EV charging stations already in place and 50 more on the way, SM has already delivered more than 14,500 kWh of clean power to help reduce emissions, one plugged-in car at a time.

SM City Tanza powers up with 2,286 solar panels, generating a peak capacity of 1,257.30 kW—part of SM Supermalls’ commitment to clean and sustainable energy.

2. Powered by the Sun

Step inside many SM malls and you’re standing beneath solar energy. In 2024 alone, 47 SM properties generated 27.6 GWh of solar power—enough to offset thousands of cars’ carbon footprints. The goal? 100MWp of rooftop solar capacity by 2027.

3. Let Nature Light the Way

Natural light streams through skylights, Sky Gardens invite a breath of fresh air, and energy-saving LEDs glow in the hallways. SM malls are built to be both beautiful and efficient. Even escalators are motion-sensor activated to cut down on unnecessary power use.

4. Waste Less, Live More

The #SMWasteFreeFuture campaign is changing the game on how mall tenants and employees manage waste. Through easy-to-follow sorting systems—Recyclable, Disposable, Compostable (RDC)—SM is pushing for a cleaner, smarter approach to trash.

SM employees lead by example as they properly segregate waste using the RDC (Recyclable, Disposable, Compostable) bin system—showing that building a #SMWasteFreeFuture starts from within.

5. Get Paid to Recycle

Held on the first Friday and Saturday of each month, SM’s Trash-to-Cash program has recycled over a million kilos of waste materials. Shoppers can bring everything from used paper and plastic to broken appliances and walk away with cash—and a cleaner conscience.

6. Clear Out E-Waste and Plastic the Right Way

With collection bins in Cyberzones and 15 malls across the country, SM has helped divert nearly 64,000 kg of plastic and over 11,000 kg of electronic waste from polluting the planet—thanks to partners like Friends of Hope and Smart/PLDT.

7. Protecting the Shores, One Cleanup at a Time

In 2024 alone, more than 27,000 volunteers joined SM-led coastal cleanups, collecting over 157,000 kg of waste from waterways. These efforts happen regularly, proving that even the smallest actions can ripple out into real environmental change.

Whether you’re recycling your old phone, powering your EV, or simply walking through a sunlit atrium, every visit to SM Supermalls can be a step toward a greener tomorrow. At SM, Earth Day doesn’t just happen once a year—it’s happening every single day.
