Barugo Wellness Hub Unites Generations Through Compassionate Community Healthcare

Healthcare takes on a more inclusive and community-focused approach in Barugo, Leyte, with the opening of a new wellness facility designed to serve two of the community’s most vulnerable groups—children and senior citizens.

SM Foundation has formally turned over the Barugo Municipal Hospital Wellness Hub to the local government of Barugo, providing a dedicated space where pediatric and geriatric patients can receive medical attention in an environment built around comfort, safety, dignity, and human connection.

Unlike conventional hospital spaces that separate patients mainly according to medical needs, the Wellness Hub introduces an intergenerational concept. Pediatric and geriatric services are housed within one facility while maintaining dedicated areas suited to the specific requirements of younger and older patients.

Upon entering, patients and their families are welcomed by a reception and waiting area designed to create a less intimidating hospital experience. Comfortable seating, natural light, indoor greenery, and a play corner for children help establish a warmer atmosphere while patients wait for consultations.

A key feature is the shared activity area, where children and senior patients can take part in supervised activities including storytelling, arts and crafts, music therapy, light exercises, and social programs. These interactions are intended to support emotional wellness alongside physical recovery.

For older adults, opportunities for conversation and participation can help address feelings of loneliness and isolation. Children, meanwhile, can develop empathy, confidence, and social skills through positive interaction with older generations.

The facility also places importance on efficient healthcare delivery. A centrally positioned nurses’ station provides healthcare workers with greater visibility of the pediatric and geriatric areas, allowing staff to monitor patients more effectively and respond quickly when assistance is needed.

Separate wards ensure that each age group receives appropriate care. The pediatric ward includes child-sized beds and sufficient space for parents and caregivers to remain near young patients during treatment and recovery. The geriatric ward incorporates mobility-friendly beds, proper lighting, and anti-slip flooring to help older patients move more safely and independently.

An equipped isolation room provides additional protection against infectious diseases, an important consideration for children and senior citizens who may be particularly vulnerable to illness. Accessible toilets and shower facilities feature wider entrances, grab bars, and non-slip surfaces for greater safety and privacy.

Universal and biophilic design principles are also evident throughout the hub. Natural lighting, glass elements, warm wood finishes, and thoughtfully planned spaces create a more welcoming environment while reducing unnecessary walking distances for healthcare personnel.

Practical features include a designated storage area for assistive devices such as wheelchairs, walkers, canes, crutches, and pediatric gait trainers. An open-air rainwater catchment and handwashing area adds an environmentally conscious element while supporting proper hygiene for patients, visitors, and hospital personnel.

With the Barugo Municipal Hospital Wellness Hub, healthcare extends beyond medical treatment. The facility shows how thoughtful design can create a shared environment where different generations receive compassionate care while finding opportunities to connect.
