AdNU’s Historic Landmark to Rise Again with Henry Sy Foundation Support

Present at the groundbreaking ceremony were SM Supermalls Senior AVP for Mall Operations-South Luzon Engr. Jason Terrenal, AdNU VP for Higher Education Dr. Digna Alba, Naga City Mayor and AdNU Board Member Leni Robredo, AdNU Board Chairman Magno Edilberto Conag III, AdNU President Fr. Aristotle C. Dy, SJ, and AdNU Senior High School Principal Dr. Lydia T. Goingo.

A new chapter unfolds for Ateneo de Naga University (AdNU) as the Henry Sy Foundation, Inc. (HSFI) joins hands with the institution to reconstruct its 85-year-old administration building at the Bagumbayan Campus. The groundbreaking ceremony marked not just the start of construction, but the renewal of a symbol that has long stood at the heart of Bikolano education and culture.

Built more than eight decades ago, the historic structure once served as the home of AdNU’s early classrooms, chapel, library, faculty rooms, and science laboratories—spaces that shaped generations of students and educators. The reconstruction project envisions a modernized yet heritage-inspired facility that will enhance learning and community engagement for future Ateneans. Upon completion, it will proudly bear the name Henry Sy Sr. Hall, paying tribute to the visionary founder of the SM Group whose commitment to education continues to inspire nationwide.

The 85-year-old building, which has housed classrooms and other key school facilities over the decades, will be restored and upgraded to include new spaces that can serve more students, alumni, and partner communities.

Through the years, the Henry Sy Foundation has helped elevate the country’s academic landscape by supporting transformative learning spaces such as the Henry Sy Sr. Halls at De La Salle University, the University of the Philippines campuses in Manila and Bonifacio Global City, and the University of Santo Tomas, among others. Each project reflects the Foundation’s enduring mission to empower youth through access to quality education and world-class facilities.

For AdNU and the wider Bicol region, the reconstruction of the Henry Sy Sr. Hall represents more than just infrastructure—it is a bridge between history and progress, between the dreams of the past and the promise of tomorrow.
