For years, Grade 6 pupils at Sta. Filomena Central School (SFCS) in Iligan City struggled with makeshift classrooms and shifting schedules caused by overcrowding. That challenge finally came to an end on August 27, when SM Prime, through SM Foundation, turned over a brand-new two-story, four-classroom school building that will now allow more than 200 students to attend regular whole-day classes.

The modern facility is designed not just to address congestion but to elevate the quality of learning. Each classroom comes fully equipped with curved whiteboards, wall fans, and its own toilet with a wash basin. The 200 armchairs provided include options for left-handed pupils, all crafted by a community of Persons with Disability (PWD) artisans in Surigao—making the project not only a gift to students but also a livelihood boost for marginalized groups.
Accessibility and safety were central in the construction. The building features a ramp and PWD-friendly restroom to ensure inclusivity, while fire alarms, emergency lights, and strategically placed handwashing stations promote both safety and hygiene for the entire school community. Beyond classrooms, the structure also houses a mini library, a child protection room, and a faculty space—designed to enhance both student learning and teacher productivity.

SFCS Principal Walter Tupas expressed deep gratitude, noting how the project addressed a long-standing shortage that often forced students into “emergency classes.” He said the new facility not only solves the immediate problem of overcrowding but also uplifts the overall learning environment.
The turnover represents more than just new classrooms—it is a statement of commitment to education and community. For the students of Sta. Filomena, it means no more fragmented school days. For teachers, it means better conditions to focus on instruction. And for parents, it brings the reassurance that their children can now study in a safe, complete, and supportive space.

With this initiative, SM Foundation reaffirms its belief that every child deserves access to quality education in an environment that fosters growth, dignity, and opportunity. What once were emergency classes have now transformed into empowered learning experiences—marking a fresh start for Sta. Filomena Central School and its community.
