A Magical Movie Experience Awaits Families with Autism

To be held simultaneously in 10 SM Cinemas on January 17, 2025, the free screening of “Firefly,” an award-winning Filipino film, makes movie-going more inclusive.

In celebration of National Autism Consciousness Week, SM Cares and SM Cinema, in collaboration with the Autism Society Philippines and GMA Pictures, invite families to a special sensory-friendly movie screening. On Friday, January 17, 2025, from 8:00 AM to 10:30 AM, the critically acclaimed Filipino fantasy film Firefly will be shown for free at select SM Cinemas nationwide.

The “Lights Up, Sounds Down” screening offers a unique and inclusive movie experience designed specifically for children on the autism spectrum. Theaters will adjust their settings to ensure a welcoming environment: lights will remain dim but not dark, sound levels will be softened, and attendees are free to move around or make sounds during the film. This thoughtful approach aims to make cinema-going enjoyable and accessible for neurodiverse audiences.

SM Supermalls is committed to inclusivity, providing employee training and accessible facilities to enhance the cinema experience for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families.

Participating cinemas include SM North Edsa, SM City Olongapo Central, SM City Baguio, SM City Tuguegarao, SM City Marikina, SM Southmall, SM City Cebu, SM City Bacolod, SM City Davao, and SM City Telabastagan.

Firefly, directed by Zig Dulay, follows a young boy’s enchanting journey of self-discovery. Starring Alessandra De Rossi and newcomer Euwenn Mikaell, the 2023 Metro Manila Film Festival Best Picture winner has captured hearts with its magical storytelling and heartfelt performances.

The sensory-friendly screening tailors the environment to the needs of children on the autism spectrum by adjusting lights, volume, and allowing movement and vocalizations.

Commitment to Inclusivity

This event highlights SM’s broader commitment to inclusivity and support for persons with disabilities (PWDs). SM Cares, the Corporate Social Responsibility arm of SM Prime Holdings, continually works to create an environment that is welcoming to all. Mall staff undergo specialized training to better assist individuals on the autism spectrum, and facilities are designed to be accessible to everyone.

SM Cares advocates for a range of causes, including programs for the environment, women and breastfeeding mothers, children and youth, senior citizens, and bikers. The sensory-friendly screening is just one of many initiatives aimed at fostering social inclusion and celebrating diversity.

In 2022, a sensory-friendly screening of “Lightyear,” part of the “Lights Up, Sounds Down” initiative for individuals on the autism spectrum, is held at SM North EDSA Cinema.
