Harvesting Hope: SM Foundation Expands Farmer Training for Stronger Livelihoods

100 farmers from Cagayan De Oro begin their 14-week Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan Farming Program, where they will learn modern agricultural techniques, product development, supported by partnerships with various agencies.

SM Foundation is deepening its commitment to Filipino farmers through the expansion of its Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan (KSK) program, a flagship initiative designed to equip agricultural communities with modern, market-ready farming skills. Since its inception, the program has reached thousands across the country—and in 2024 alone, more than 400 training sessions have empowered over 32,000 farmers with the tools and knowledge to boost productivity and income.

The program’s latest wave of activities reflects both reach and impact. On August 8, a fresh batch of 100 farmers from Cagayan de Oro embarked on their KSK journey, learning innovative, sustainable, and profitable farming techniques aimed at meeting market demands. Just days earlier, on August 6, 100 farmers from San Juan, Batangas marked the completion of their training, ready to apply their new skills in their own fields. This was followed by the August 13 graduation of 100 more participants from Sariaya and San Andres, Quezon—proof of the program’s steady momentum.

Beyond technical skills, KSK focuses on creating real market linkages for farmers, ensuring their produce reaches consumers efficiently and profitably. By bridging training with access to buyers, the program helps farmers move beyond subsistence, enabling them to secure sustainable livelihoods and contribute to local food security.

SM Foundation’s approach recognizes that agriculture is more than planting and harvesting—it is a livelihood system that thrives when knowledge, resources, and markets connect. Through partnerships with local government units, agriculture experts, and agribusiness players, the KSK program fosters an ecosystem where farmers can innovate, compete, and grow in a modern market landscape.

Looking ahead, SM Foundation is set to launch more KSK sessions in additional regions this year, staying true to its mission of uplifting communities and ensuring every harvest brings not just food to the table, but dignity, stability, and hope to farming families. As more farmers graduate from the program, the seeds of change planted today promise a future of stronger rural economies and healthier communities across the Philippines.
