The fifth-floor garden of Megamall Building A will feature an ETFE roofing system—a lightweight, highly transparent and eco-friendly alternative to glass that allows more natural light into the indoor garden.
SM Prime Holdings, Inc. is setting the stage for a new era in retail and sustainability with a P7-billion redevelopment of SM Megamall, slated for phased completion from 2027 to 2029. More than just a facelift, the transformation will reimagine the Philippines’ largest mall into a vibrant, eco-conscious landmark designed for the next generation of shoppers.
Partnering with UK-based architectural firm Benoy—renowned for global icons like Jewel Changi in Singapore and Icon Siam in Thailand—SM Megamall’s new “Crystal Islands” concept will embrace flowing, organic designs, abundant natural light, and a seamless spatial experience. Nature-inspired architecture will intertwine with innovative mobility features, making the mall more accessible and intuitive for millions of annual visitors.
The redevelopment will expand the mall’s gross leasable area by 20,000 square meters and introduce themed retail zones and modern wayfinding systems. Inside, shoppers can look forward to state-of-the-art cinemas, a new Megatrade Hall, a redesigned food court, and upgraded common areas and restrooms—all integrated into a refreshed, contemporary environment.
Infrastructure upgrades will also elevate convenience and efficiency. A four-level basement parking facility will add over 1,600 slots, while expanded walkways, higher ceilings, and wider corridors will improve circulation. Modernized escalators, elevators, and vertical transport systems will ensure smoother movement throughout the complex.
Sustainability will be woven into every corner of the redevelopment. A 500-cubic-meter rainwater harvesting system will support water conservation efforts, while ETFE roofing, skylights, and clerestory windows will maximize natural light and reduce cooling needs. Energy-efficient LED lighting will cut power use by up to 50%, while sensor-activated escalators are expected to trim energy consumption by 30%. SM Prime is also exploring the integration of solar panels to further its carbon-reduction goals.
These green features reflect SM Prime’s commitment to sustainable development, aligning with its broader ESG objectives while setting a benchmark for eco-friendly mall design in the Philippines.
For over three decades, SM Megamall has been a cornerstone of Mandaluyong’s central business district and a gathering place for millions. This ambitious redevelopment will not only preserve its iconic status but also position it as a global model for sustainable retail spaces—ready to welcome the next decade of commerce, culture, and community.
