As the Philippine tourism industry continues its strong recovery and expansion, the demand for skilled, adaptable, and industry-ready professionals is becoming more important than ever. Recognizing this need, VFS Global has completed the first year of its Trailblazers in Tourism Programme, a youth empowerment initiative that has equipped more than 600 Filipino students with practical skills and career development opportunities designed to prepare them for the future of tourism and hospitality.
The programme, implemented in partnership with the Asia Society for Social Improvement and Sustainable Transformation (ASSIST), focused on bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world industry requirements. Through a series of workshops, mentoring sessions, interactive learning activities, and virtual engagements, students gained valuable insights into career readiness, professional growth, and workplace expectations.
Tourism remains one of the Philippines’ most significant economic sectors, generating employment opportunities across hospitality, travel, aviation, and related industries. However, industry leaders have long emphasized the need for stronger connections between educational institutions and employers to ensure graduates possess the skills needed in today’s competitive workforce.
For VFS Global, the Trailblazers in Tourism Programme represents a meaningful investment in developing future professionals while supporting the long-term growth of the tourism ecosystem.
According to Atul Lall, Regional Head for North Asia at VFS Global, empowering young people through practical learning experiences creates lasting benefits not only for participants but also for the broader industry. He noted that tourism continues to play a vital role in economic development, making it important to equip aspiring professionals with skills that match evolving industry demands.
The programme officially launched in April at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, bringing together students and educators for a series of training sessions focused on employability, career planning, and professional development. Participants attended workshops that explored workplace readiness and the skills needed to thrive in tourism-related careers.
One of the programme’s most innovative features was the introduction of Success360, an educational board game designed to make learning more engaging and interactive. Through gameplay, students developed critical thinking, communication, teamwork, and decision-making skills while learning strategies for navigating professional environments.
The initiative later expanded to Taguig City University, where nearly 300 students from tourism, hospitality, and business management programs participated in immersive learning activities. Through Success360 and guided discussions, students explored practical approaches to securing employment, succeeding in entry-level positions, and building sustainable careers.
To ensure wider accessibility, the programme also introduced virtual learning sessions that connected participants from various regions across the country. More than 100 students and educators joined online discussions covering sustainability, professional development, and effective job-search techniques. Interactive digital gameplay sessions further enhanced participation and engagement.
A defining element of the programme was its strong emphasis on mentorship. Under VFS Global’s corporate volunteering initiative, Champions of Change, employees underwent specialized training before serving as mentors and facilitators. A total of 16 VFS Global employees volunteered their time and expertise, sharing real-world experiences and industry knowledge directly with students.
This mentorship component gave participants valuable exposure to professional perspectives that are often unavailable in traditional classroom settings. By interacting with industry practitioners, students gained a clearer understanding of workplace realities and career pathways.
The programme concluded in May at the VFS Global Visa Application Centre located at Parqal Mall in Parañaque City. The culminating event provided participants with the opportunity to celebrate their achievements while interacting with company executives and professionals. The experience allowed students to connect classroom concepts with actual business operations, further strengthening their understanding of industry practices.
For ASSIST, the partnership demonstrates how collaboration between the private sector and educational institutions can create meaningful opportunities for young people. Mahesh Krishnamurthy, Director of Projects at ASSIST, emphasized that preparing future professionals requires more than academic instruction. Equipping students with confidence, practical tools, and exposure to real-world environments helps build a workforce capable of meeting future challenges.
As VFS Global continues its commitment to youth empowerment and community development across various regions, the success of the Trailblazers in Tourism Programme highlights the growing importance of industry-driven education initiatives. By combining mentorship, innovation, and experiential learning, the programme is helping shape a new generation of Filipino tourism professionals ready to contribute to one of the country’s most dynamic industries.
