As thousands of students return to classrooms for a new academic year, four public schools across the Philippines received much-needed improvements through the efforts of Sun Life Financial-Philippines Foundation, Inc. (Sun Life Foundation) under this year’s Brigada Eskwela program.
The initiative focused on creating safer, cleaner, and more welcoming learning spaces for students and teachers. In Taguig City, Daanghari Elementary School became the centerpiece of the volunteer-driven campaign. A total of 119 Sun Life advisors and employees dedicated their time to repainting school hallways and classroom furniture while helping complete ongoing repair and improvement works around the campus. The activity aimed to enhance both the appearance and functionality of the school environment before classes officially began.

Recognizing the importance of safety and disaster preparedness, Sun Life Foundation also donated 450 hard hats for students and school personnel. The equipment is expected to support emergency readiness efforts and help strengthen the school community’s resilience during natural disasters and unforeseen incidents.

The volunteer effort extended beyond Metro Manila. Sun Life employees and advisors simultaneously conducted Brigada Eskwela activities in three schools located in different regions of the country. These included Kabugwason Elementary School in Bacolod City, Donato M. Pison Sr. Memorial School in Iloilo City, and Divisoria Elementary School in Zamboanga City. Volunteers carried out classroom repairs, repainting projects, and general clean-up activities to ensure that school facilities were ready for the opening of classes.

Several members of Sun Life’s leadership team joined the initiative, including JJ Moreno, Chief Executive Officer and Country Head of Sun Life Philippines; Joy Castillo, President of Sun Life Foundation and Chief Operating Officer of Sun Life Grepa Financial, Inc.; Al Cruz, Vice President of Sun Life Foundation and Chief Strategy and Enablement Officer of Sun Life Philippines; and Kristine Millete, Executive Director of Sun Life Foundation.
According to Castillo, participation in Brigada Eskwela remains one of the foundation’s meaningful ways of supporting education and helping schools provide students with conducive environments for learning and growth.

Through initiatives like Brigada Eskwela, Sun Life Foundation continues to invest in educational development by helping improve learning spaces and supporting the well-being of Filipino students. The program reflects the organization’s broader commitment to empowering communities and creating opportunities that contribute to a brighter future for the next generation.
