SM Supermalls and Autism Society Philippines Forge Path Toward Inclusive Employment

Strengthening our commitment to a more inclusive community, SM Supermalls and ASP sign the Memorandum of Understanding for Inclusive Hiring of talents on the spectrum.

SM Supermalls has taken a significant step toward advancing workplace inclusivity by partnering with the Autism Society Philippines (ASP), aiming to provide meaningful employment opportunities for individuals on the autism spectrum. This collaboration strengthens SM’s longstanding commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and extends its efforts to build a truly inclusive environment across all its business segments.

This newly signed partnership represents a continuation of SM Markets’ trailblazing move in 2016 when it became one of the first retail groups in the country to embrace autism-inclusive hiring. The latest initiative elevates that mission by expanding opportunities within the SM ecosystem, particularly in roles that allow individuals on the spectrum to contribute, grow, and thrive in the retail industry.

SM Supermalls and ASP Leaders are dedicated to sharing valuable insights, inspiring us to continually enhance and transform our customer experiences.

A ceremonial signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) took place at Book Nook in SM Podium—an inclusive community learning space supported by SM Cares. As part of the partnership, Book Nook will soon be home to individuals on the spectrum, employed as concierges, making it not just a place for reading and learning, but a hub of empowerment and belonging.

“Book Nook was always designed to be a space of welcome and inclusion,” said Ms. Shereen T. Sy. “With this initiative, we reinforce that mission by turning the space into a real-life example of opportunity and acceptance.”

Ms. Shereen Sy shares a thoughtful message that encourages proper understanding of each member of the community to be able to serve them better.

Ms. Mona Magno Veluz, Country Manager of ASP Autism Works, expressed enthusiasm over the initiative. “We are thrilled to collaborate with SM Supermalls,” she said. “We hope this encourages more companies to create meaningful spaces for Filipinos with disabilities in the workforce.”

The initiative is anchored in SM Cares’ broader vision of inclusive employment, striving to cultivate workplaces where people with disabilities are not just included but empowered and celebrated for their talents and individuality.

“Inclusion is not just part of our business strategy—it’s part of our identity,” emphasized Mr. Steven T. Tan, President of SM Supermalls. “This partnership with ASP is a reflection of our goal to be a mall and a community for all.”

As SM continues to expand its inclusive practices, this partnership serves as a blueprint for the future—a future where everyone, regardless of ability, can find purpose, opportunity, and a true sense of belonging.
