SM shows solidarity for Down syndrome community through this year’s Happy Walk

Since its inception in 2003, Happy Walk has become a symbol of joy, awareness, and inclusivity for those with Down syndrome and their families. Supported by SM Cares and the Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines, this annual event has grown from a modest gathering to a nationwide program, leaving a positive impact in its wake.

SM Cares, a long time-supporter of the Down Syndrome community, is celebrating 20 years of supporting communities. This 2024, SM malls celebrate Happy Walk in SMX Manila, SM City Cebu and SM City Bacolod

Spanning across SM Megamall, SM North EDSA, and SM Mall of Asia, Happy Walk has found a home in various locations over the years. Initially starting in parking lots, it evolved to larger event areas like Megatrade Hall and SM North EDSA Sky Dome, before settling in SMX Manila at the SM Mall of Asia Complex in 2016.

This year’s Happy Walk got even bigger with over 5,000 overall attendees, with 480 persons registered with Down Syndrome, the highest across runs. The event was held at the SMX

This journey exemplifies the strength of community and the collective drive for a more inclusive society. Through a longstanding partnership with the Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines (DSAPI), SM Cares continues to demonstrate unwavering support for the Down syndrome community.

All for Down, several executives showed full support during the event. Among them were (third from left) Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines (DSAPI) President Luis Harder, along with Toy Kingdom Senior Vice President for Operations Ms. Karen Dechavez; Toy Kingdom Vice President for Operations Ms. Myra Dumangas; SM Supermalls’ Assistant Vice President for Marketing Hanna Carinna Sy; SM Prime Holdings Chairman of the Executive Committee Hans Sy; Atty. Peter Pardo, Chief of Staff of Pasay City Mayor Emi Calixto-Rubiano; SM Prime Chief Finance Officer John Ong, and DSAPI’s Elmer Lapena, Agnes Lapeņa and Nill Arroyo

The annual Happy Walk, held on March 24th, serves as a tangible expression of this commitment, fostering awareness and empowerment. For over two decades, SM Cares has stood by the Down syndrome community, both through the Happy Walk and as a consistent partner of DSAPI since 2007.

SM City Cebu also participated in the Happy Walk with over 1,000 participants, bringing together their own local communities in solidarity for people with Down syndrome

This enduring collaboration underscores SM’s dedication to promoting compassion and acceptance for individuals with Down syndrome, while ensuring an inclusive experience for all within their malls. By participating in the Happy Walk, SM Cares reinforces its mission of fostering a more inclusive society.

Over 500 attendees came to SM City Bacolod to further raise awareness for a great cause. Aside from the walk, Natataning Nilalangs had a fashion show and mascot meet and greet

Through this event, they encourage greater understanding and appreciation for individuals with Down syndrome, helping to break down barriers and stereotypes. The Happy Walk is not just a one-time event but a yearly reaffirmation of SM’s commitment to inclusivity and advocacy.

Also present in the event for SM City Bacolod is Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson

It serves as a platform for promoting awareness and celebrating the diverse abilities and talents within the Down syndrome community.

This year’s Happy Walk had various fun activities and events for attendees to participate in, alongside walking with members of the Down syndrome community

As Happy Walk continues to evolve and grow, it remains a beacon of hope and solidarity, inspiring others to join in the journey towards a more inclusive and compassionate society.

SM Employees and their families also showed support to our Natatanging Nilalangs during the Happy Walk 2024 – showing SM’s commitment in being a Mall for All

Through initiatives like this, SM Cares and DSAPI pave the way for a brighter future where everyone is embraced and valued, regardless of differences.
