At SM Prime, sustainability isn’t just a goal—it’s a guiding principle. The company continues to take bold strides in environmental innovation, integrating sustainable practices into every layer of its operations. More than just words, SM Prime’s actions are driving meaningful change and setting new standards for the Philippine commercial real estate industry.
Central to SM Prime’s efforts is its commitment to reach Net Zero carbon emissions by 2040. To bring this vision to life, the company is rapidly expanding its use of renewable energy, particularly solar power, across its vast property portfolio. By harnessing clean energy, SM is reducing its dependence on fossil fuels and contributing to global climate solutions.

As of early 2025, 47 SM Supermalls across the country are now equipped with solar photovoltaic systems, boasting a combined peak capacity of 63 Megawatts. These installations include over 118,000 solar panels—each one playing a part in slashing carbon emissions and promoting clean energy within the sector.
A standout example of this initiative is the iconic SM Mall of Asia (MOA). Its innovative MOA Sky rooftop not only provides a multifunctional space but also houses 555 solar panels on a covered walkway, delivering an additional 0.3 Megawatt peak capacity. In total, MOA now generates 3 Megawatts of solar power, enough to run around 1,000 escalators daily or supply energy to about 1,800 homes for a month.

These efforts earned recognition during the 2025 Energy Efficiency Day conference, where SM’s engineering arm shared the group’s advancements in energy-saving technologies. SM MOA’s success also led to it receiving the Department of Energy’s inaugural Sustainable Energy Award for a Private Institution—highlighting the real-world impact and economic potential of large-scale solar use.
Innovation at SM isn’t limited to flagship properties. SM City Bicutan recently introduced solar-powered parasols in its Sky Garden. Designed to store energy with just a few hours of sunlight, these parasols provide several hours of nighttime lighting—offering both aesthetic appeal and practical benefit for mallgoers while promoting green design.

“Through these initiatives, we’re not only shrinking our carbon footprint but also unlocking long-term savings and creating a more sustainable, customer-centric experience,” shared Steven Tan, President of SM Supermalls.
As it steadily advances toward its Net Zero 2040 target, SM Prime is showing how business growth and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand—powering a more sustainable future for communities today and generations to come.
