SM Supermalls has made a significant stride toward sustainability with the unveiling of a cutting-edge rooftop photovoltaic (PV) system at SM City Santa Rosa.
This impressive solar farm generates energy that covers up to 16% of the mall’s annual power usage, equivalent to charging over two million mobile phones, lighting nearly twelve thousand street lamps for a year, and providing electricity to around 390 average Filipino homes.
SM City Santa Rosa unveils largest SM solar photovoltaic (PV) system, leading SM Supermalls in sustainability. Key figures championed a greener future at the April 29 press launch including SM Supermalls’ President Steven Tan (3rd from left, front), Santa Rosa City Mayor Arlene Arcillas (2nd from left, front), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Environmental Management Bureau Director Jacqueline Caancan (2nd from right, front) and Chief of Environmental Management Bureau (EMB)-Hazardous Waste Management Section Geri Geronimo Sañez (2nd from right, back), Department of Energy (DOE) Energy Utilization Management Bureau Assistant Director Lana Rose Manaligod (3rd from right, front) and Division Chief for Renewable Energy Management Bureau (REMB) Engr. Ferdinand Binondo (3rd from right, back), Meralco’s Head for Enterprise – Commercial and Conglomerates Bernice Gretchel Garcia-Rama (third from left, back), and Buskowitz President James Buskowitz (right, front). This bold move forms part of SM Prime’s wider goal to achieve more than 100 MWp capacity using solar PV systems within three years. By harnessing the power of sunlight, SM City Santa Rosa aims to reduce its reliance on traditional energy sources considerably, thereby decreasing its carbon footprint and contributing positively towards global climate change mitigation efforts.
SM City Santa Rosa’s commitment to environmental protection is evident in their sustainable initiatives which include installing 2,712 energy-efficient LED lights throughout the facility and operating an advanced water recovery facility.
The latter reclaims and recycles water using state-of-the-art filtration technology resulting in approximately four million cubic meters of annually recycled water.

In a further nod towards green practices, SM City Santa Rosa has installed an Electric Vehicle (EV) charging station—joining fifty others across nationwide locations—in anticipation of increasing EV adoption rates.
The move serves not only as a convenience feature for shoppers but also encourages environmentally friendly transportation solutions.
The series of green initiatives undertaken by SM City Santa Rosa symbolizes hope amidst urgent global challenges related to climate change and environmental degradation.
By prioritizing sustainability through such innovative solutions, they are setting new standards for responsible business conduct while simultaneously paving the way for a more sustainable future.
