In its mission to foster healthier communities, the SM Foundation, through its Wellness Program, recently handed over the newly rehabilitated San Jose District Health Center in Tacloban City, marking its 211th Wellness Center. Serving 43,575 residents, the center provides essential services such as family planning, prenatal care, child wellness, TB treatment, and adolescent health consultations.
Established in 2010, the center faced massive destruction during Typhoon Yolanda in 2013, which left it barely operational. Recognizing its importance to the community, the SM Foundation took on the task of rebuilding and modernizing the facility. The upgraded center now features delivery and recovery rooms, an adolescent consultation space, breastfeeding areas, a well-stocked pharmacy, PWD-friendly amenities, and sustainable additions like a rainwater catchment system and air-cleaning paints to enhance environmental quality.
Beyond structural upgrades, the SM Foundation also introduced technology to improve patient care. Laptops for digitizing medical records and facilitating online consultations were provided, ensuring efficient healthcare access even for those in remote areas. These innovations align with the government’s PhilHealth Konsulta program, enabling better data management and streamlined services.
The center’s reopening coincided with the 11th anniversary of Savemore’s presence in Tacloban and the periodic maintenance of the Tacloban City Hospital, further cementing SM Foundation’s commitment to bolstering the region’s healthcare system.
Having restored the Tacloban City Hospital after Yolanda’s devastation, SM Foundation continues to uphold its promise of hope and healing. The modernized San Jose District Health Center stands as a testament to resilience and the Foundation’s enduring dedication to uplifting lives and strengthening healthcare for Filipinos in need.
