Purpose in Action: UPLB Honors Victor Persius Chan for CSR Leadership

The SM Prime Sustainability Scholarship, created in 2023 through a partnership between the SM Group and the University of the Philippines Los Baños, grew from the vision prepared by Chan. It seeks to empower Human Ecology and Forestry students from underserved communities and inspire them to become future stewards of sustainability.

Change begins with a single spark—an idea that grows through dialogue, collaboration, and the will to make a difference. For University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) alumnus Victor Persius F. Chan, that spark has evolved into a lifelong commitment to turning corporate influence into a force for good.

At the 107th UPLB Loyalty Day, held under the theme “UPLB Alumni: A Force for Transforming Communities,” the university paid tribute to graduates who embody its ideals of integrity, service, and nation-building. Among the honorees was Chan, who received the College of Human Ecology Distinguished Alumni Award for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)—a recognition of his efforts to align business success with social impact.

Geronimo-Panopio (Human and Family Development) (center), Victor Persius F. Chan (Corporate Social Responsibility) (fourth from left), and Julius B. Lunar (Social Development through Capacity Building and Program Management).

With an extensive background in CSR, stakeholder engagement, and development communication, Chan has played a pivotal role in advancing values-driven initiatives that create meaningful change. His work with institutions like SM Foundation has demonstrated how purposeful leadership can bridge sectors, turning corporate programs into platforms for empowerment, sustainability, and inclusive growth.

One of his landmark contributions is the creation of the SM Prime Sustainability Scholarship, established in 2023 through the partnership of the SM Group and UPLB. Designed to support students from underserved communities—particularly those in Human Ecology and Forestry—the scholarship nurtures a new generation of environmental stewards who will carry forward the mission of sustainability. This initiative embodies Chan’s belief that progress is rooted in education, compassion, and collaboration.

UPLB recently recognized a roster of outstanding alumni from various sectors, including Victor Persius Chan, for showcasing how public service values can thrive within business environments.

According to Dr. Jennifer Marie Amparo, Dean of the College of Human Ecology, the Distinguished Alumni Awards recognize graduates whose careers exemplify leadership, service, and integrity—values that bring honor to the university and lasting benefit to society. “Their achievements show how these values take shape in diverse fields and settings, including the corporate world,” she shared.

For Chan, the recognition reaffirms that corporations can be agents of transformation when guided by empathy and shared purpose. His approach to CSR—anchored on sustainability, inclusion, and genuine engagement—demonstrates how private enterprises can complement public institutions in building resilient and thriving communities.

Ultimately, the honor celebrates not just individual achievement, but a collective vision: that knowledge, compassion, and responsible leadership can create ripples of progress that uplift generations.
