At the 2024 Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR), the spotlight was on the private sector’s pivotal role in enhancing community resilience.

The event, hosted by the Philippine government and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), gathered representatives from governments, civil society, the private sector, and academia to assess progress in implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.

A key moment in the conference was Hans Sy, Chairman of the Executive Committee of SM Prime Holdings, emphasizing the private sector’s responsibility in integrating disaster risk reduction (DRR) into business strategies. Sy called for collaboration through public-private partnerships and urged businesses to invest in vulnerable communities to build a more resilient and sustainable future.

SM Prime Holdings, one of Southeast Asia’s leading property developers, showcased its commitment to DRR through projects like the “Adopt-a-City” initiative and disaster-resilient infrastructure.

These efforts include malls with advanced flood mitigation systems and earthquake-resistant designs, demonstrating how private enterprises can lead in disaster preparedness. During the conference, the SM Resilience Center hosted a simulation exercise, demonstrating coordinated responses between businesses and local governments in times of crisis.

The APMCDRR 2024 highlighted the critical intersection of resilience and sustainable development, with participants reaffirming the need for collective action between governments, businesses, and communities. As climate risks continue to rise, the private sector’s engagement in resilience strategies remains essential in safeguarding the future of the Asia-Pacific region.
