The Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), an icon of Filipino artistry and global diplomacy, is in the midst of a historic transformation—preparing to reopen in October 2025 with renewed grandeur and modern capability. For nearly five decades, it has stood as the nation’s premier venue for pivotal events, from world leader summits to milestone celebrations.
Closed for the past five months, the PICC is undergoing extensive restoration to meet two landmark moments in 2026: its golden anniversary and the Philippines’ hosting of the ASEAN Summit. This dual milestone has driven a meticulous balance of heritage preservation and state-of-the-art upgrades, ensuring the center remains a leader in the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) industry.

Preserving Locsin’s Masterpiece
Designed by National Artist for Architecture Leandro V. Locsin, the PICC is a bold example of brutalist architecture—defined by massive geometric forms, exposed concrete textures, and minimalist functionality across its 12-hectare complex. The renovation honors Locsin’s 1976 vision, with skilled artisans reviving the raw beauty of its concrete elements, sharpening softened edges, and revealing once-muted textures.
Complementing this strength are the softer features that give the PICC its warmth—wooden rails flowing along concrete stairways, warm-toned walls and floors, and ambient lighting that both amazes and invites. This interplay of light and shadow, curve and line, cold and warm, forms what PICC leaders call the “Brutalist Weave.”

Blending Heritage with Innovation
While restoration safeguards the building’s cultural integrity, modernization ensures its competitive edge. New high-speed Wi-Fi, advanced security systems, energy-efficient lighting, and complete audio-visual upgrades—including massive LED walls in every hall—will redefine event hosting at the PICC. These features will allow it to accommodate the most demanding international gatherings while remaining rooted in Filipino hospitality.
Equally important is the PICC’s role as a custodian of art. Hundreds of priceless works have been carefully removed during the renovation, except for four permanently installed treasures—among them Jose Joya’s monumental Pagdiriwang and Arturo Luz’s Grid and Anito sculptures—protected under strict conservation protocols. Upon reopening, visitors will also experience a newly curated art collection in partnership with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, reinforcing the PICC’s identity as both a world-class convention center and a living museum.

General Manager Atty. Nicolette Ann P. Cruz sums up the vision: “When we reopen our doors, we will welcome the world into a 50-year vision of lasting genius and artistry—heritage woven with innovation, Filipino warmth fused with global excellence.”
