Museo del Galeón Brings Maritime History Alive at MOA

Museo del Galeón features a full-scale representation of the 17th-century Galeón Espíritu Santo, alongside interactive exhibits and audiovisual installations that explore the Philippines’ maritime heritage and its role in the historic Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade.

Philippine maritime history is finding a new home at the SM Mall of Asia Complex as Museo del Galeón introduces visitors to centuries of seafaring, cultural exchange, and global connections through an immersive museum experience.

Spanning four levels and approximately 9,000 square meters, Museo del Galeón is the country’s first experiential maritime museum. Its exhibitions combine interactive displays, storytelling, and live programming to explore the Philippines’ significant role in the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade.

At the heart of the museum is a full-scale interpretation of the 17th-century Galeón Espíritu Santo. Crafted from fiberglass by Filipino artisans, the massive vessel gives visitors a striking perspective on the ships that once crossed the Pacific, carrying people, goods, ideas, and cultures between Asia and the Americas.

Its location within the MOA Complex places history alongside one of Metro Manila’s busiest lifestyle and tourism destinations. Since opening in May, the museum has welcomed thousands of students, families, tourists, corporate groups, and cultural enthusiasts. Its activities have expanded to include guided and private tours, workshops, educational talks, and after-hours experiences.

The museum is also creating opportunities for businesses to participate in heritage preservation. Companies and individuals may sponsor one of its 181 permanent floating galleon installations, with each sponsored vessel carrying the supporter’s name.

“There is a real opportunity for the private sector to become part of this story—not simply as sponsors, but as partners in preserving our heritage and bringing Philippine maritime history to a much wider audience,” said Operations Director Chiqui Batac.

Batac added that the museum can provide companies with different ways of engaging clients and customers through cultural experiences and storytelling.

One recent after-hours event combined museum access with curated cocktails, a guided cocktail journey, and maritime trivia in collaboration with partner brands—demonstrating how the museum can reinterpret heritage for different audiences.

More programs are being prepared, including expert-led discussions, youth workshops, brand collaborations, and additional after-hours activities.

“Our approach is to keep the experience evolving,” Batac said. “We want visitors to have new things to discover each time they come.”

With its combination of education, immersive experiences, and private-sector participation, Museo del Galeón adds another cultural dimension to the MOA Complex while offering visitors a contemporary way to explore the Philippines’ maritime past.
