There’s something about sharks that never fails to grip audiences. Maybe it’s the raw power, the razor-toothed grin, or the reminder that once we step into the ocean, we’re not on top of the food chain anymore. Shark films have long held a spot in our guilty pleasures—equal parts fear and fascination. This month, Lionsgate Play proves that the appetite for aquatic terror is far from over, offering not one, but two new thrillers guaranteed to keep viewers on edge: Dangerous Animals and No Way Up.
Dangerous Animals: Fear Above and Below the Surface
Unlike your usual “shark-versus-swimmer” tale, Dangerous Animals raises the stakes by putting humans against both nature and themselves. At its center is Zephyr (Hassie Harrison), a wanderer caught in the clutches of Tucker (Jai Courtney), a deranged boat captain who traps his victims and feeds them to sharks in twisted experiments. The ocean is menacing, but the real monster here is human cruelty.
Director Sean Byrne calls the film “a fusion of shark film and serial killer film,” ensuring audiences get the best of both horrors. Courtney, who plays Tucker, explains the disturbing psychology behind the role: “He’s not just a villain—he’s a broken person stuck in the aftermath of trauma. Hurt people hurt people.” The result is a film that is not only bloody and relentless but also disturbingly human.

No Way Up: Survival on Borrowed Time
If Dangerous Animals is about human evil, No Way Up is about sheer survival. The film begins with a plane crash that strands a diverse group of passengers inside a sinking jet. With the fuselage slipping into the deep and a shark lurking outside, oxygen and hope both run dangerously low. Characters like Ava (Sophie McIntosh), Jed (Jeremias Amoore), Kyle (Will Attenborough), and Mardy (Phyllis Logan) must choose between impossible options: suffocate, drown, or face the predator in the abyss.
Equal parts disaster flick and survival horror, the film captures the suffocating claustrophobia of being trapped underwater. Every scene pushes viewers closer to panic, forcing them to imagine what they’d do in the same situation.
