Importation is not the solution to the food crisis, but rather the Filipino farmer

In observance of World Bread Day and World Food Day this October 16, Senator Imee Marcos highlighted the worsening food shortage in the country and urged the government to take proper action to address the issue.

Importation is not the answer to our food crisis, it’s the Filipino farmer. Why are we enriching Vietnamese, Indian, and Thai farmers while neglecting our own Filipino farmers?” Marcos said, in reference to lowering tariffs on rice. She stressed that importation is what leads to hunger and is killing local farmers.

Provide transport subsidies to farmers in Visayas and Mindanao, as well as vegetable growers in the North and Cordillera. Not just aid, but actual wages—small but reliable salaries for small farmers and fishermen,” she added.

Marcos also suggested allowing young farmers to utilize idle government lands to combat hunger and the high cost and shortage of food.

The senator also shared her initiatives aimed at boosting agriculture, such as the Young Farmers Challenge, Agrarian Reforms, Cooperative Initiatives, and efforts to double the income of farmers.

Sen. Marcos, along with former senator Ping Lacson, led the distribution of free pandesal to the residents of Quezon City as part of the celebration of World Pandesal Day.
