Ilocos Norte Achieves Lowest Poverty Rates in the Philippines

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) released a report on July 14, 2023, highlighting Ilocos Norte as the province with the lowest “Poverty Incidence Among Families” and “Poverty Incidence Among Population” in the nation.

Poverty incidence is defined by the PSA as the percentage of families or individuals with a per capita income below the poverty threshold relative to the total number of families or population.

Ilocos Norte recorded a poverty incidence of just 0.5% among families in 2023, the lowest of any province in the Philippines. Pampanga followed with 3.7%, Siquijor with 4.6%, Apayao with 5.4%, and Aklan with 6.2%.

In 2021, Ilocos Norte was the only province in Region I to achieve a single-digit “Poverty Incidence Among Population” rate at 9.0%. This figure dropped further to 0.9% in 2023, reaffirming Ilocos Norte’s status as one of the provinces with the lowest poverty rates in the country.

These milestones reflect the ongoing commitment of the Provincial Government to support the Ilokano people through strategic partnerships aimed at creating employment, boosting economic growth, and promoting sustainable development.

The Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte’s (PGIN) Public Employment Services Office and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Office have recently been honored with notable regional and national awards for their exceptional services to the community.

Under the leadership of Governor Matthew Marcos Manotoc, PGIN continues to prioritize poverty reduction initiatives by enhancing agricultural productivity, education, and employment opportunities, striving to improve the quality of life for every Ilokano family in the province.
