Helping Communities Recover

In the wake of the recent earthquake that impacted parts of General Santos City, SM Foundation and SM Cares quickly mobilized to provide much-needed assistance to affected residents. Demonstrating their commitment to community resilience and disaster response, the organizations partnered with UNIQLO Philippines to extend support to families working to rebuild their lives after the calamity.

The relief initiative focused on Barangay Balite in Lagao, one of the communities significantly affected by the earthquake. A total of 821 families received assistance aimed at helping them address their immediate needs while recovery efforts continue.

The distribution of relief goods was made possible through the combined efforts of volunteers and partner organizations. Employees from SM Supermalls joined forces with members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) to ensure that aid reached beneficiaries efficiently and safely. Their collaboration highlighted the importance of teamwork and community partnership during times of crisis.

The relief operation forms part of Operation Tulong Express (OPTE), SM Foundation’s social good program dedicated to disaster response and emergency assistance. Implemented in partnership with SM Supermalls and SM Markets, OPTE is designed to provide timely support to communities affected by natural disasters and other emergencies, particularly in areas where SM operates.

Beyond providing immediate relief, the initiative reflects SM’s continuing commitment to helping communities recover and move forward after difficult circumstances. By working alongside government agencies, corporate partners, and volunteers, SM Foundation and SM Cares continue to strengthen efforts that bring hope and practical assistance to families facing challenges.

As affected residents begin the process of rebuilding, the relief response serves as a reminder that collective action and compassion can make a meaningful difference in helping communities recover and regain stability after a disaster.
