Health Benefits of Coconut MCT Take Consumer Attention

MCT is a superfood that has numerous health benefits that range from weight management to prevention of heart problems.

With the rise of superfoods amid an increasing awareness about healthier products, a new type of coconut oil for consumption is taking the center stage. Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT) is a saturated oil or a more concentrated form of coconut oil.

“MCT, as separated from coconut oil, is made of medium-chain fatty acids that make it healthier compared to a form with long-chain fatty acids,” said United Coconut Association of the Philippines (UCAP) Vice Chairman, Marco Reyes. “It brings about a lot of wonderful health properties.”

As food and nutritional supplement, MCT can be ingested directly or can be added to salad dressings, smoothies, coffee, or just about any beverage or food. Primarily, it can raise the body’s production of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), which then removes the excess cholesterol and sends it back to the liver for disposal or recycling as bile.  Thus, it is a superfood that can help prevent the onset of cardiovascular disease.

Including MCT in a person’s regular diet is seen to bring about many health benefits, which include the following:

IDEAL WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

MCT is made of just six to 12 carbon atoms, making it metabolize and burn more quickly. In the same way, it helps convert energy faster. More energy means more effectiveness in performing activities, which in turn burn more calories leading to reduced stored fat and overall body weight in the long term. MCT can be taken before a meal to suppress appetite (which can help manage weight) or after a meal to help digest the meal and turn it into energy faster.

 INSTANT ENERGY FOR THE BRAIN

MCT is instantly converted by the body into ketones, a preferred form of fuel produced in the liver that gives immediate fuel to the brain. This is why it is advisable to take MCT in the morning or during coffee breaks. Blending it with coffee is seen to heighten alertness for a prolonged period—about five to six hours.

FIGHTS MICROBIAL/BACTERIAL GROWTH

Oil pulling or gargling of MCT is an effective anti-microbial or anti-bacterial activity. Swish MCT in the mouth for about 15 to 20 minutes to realize the ideal effects that include a fresher breath and prevention of sore throat, cough, or colds.

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE MANAGEMENT

MCT is seen to prevent and manage Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia by blocking a receptor in the brain that leads to memory loss. MCT can also control irritability, restlessness, prevent depression, and boost mental focus.

More health benefits of taking MCT will be highlighted in the 2nd World Coconut Congress Conference and Exhibition to be held from August 27 to 29 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. Experts from across the globe will share key insights and research findings to give more light about MCT and coconut oil consumption for better health.
