Gilas Finds Strength in Depth as Sotto Returns

Gilas Pilipinas showed that its World Cup qualifying campaign is about more than one player, delivering back-to-back victories in the fourth window of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers despite the absence of naturalized star Justin Brownlee.

Playing before a home crowd at the Mall of Asia Arena, the Philippines escaped Jordan with a thrilling 82-81 victory before completing the window with a convincing 68-56 win over Iran.

Brownlee has been sidelined since Gilas’ double-overtime loss to New Zealand on July 3 due to hamstring and knee concerns. His absence left a significant gap after averaging 14.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.6 steals per game in the qualifiers.

But the national team’s local players responded when their numbers were called.

One of the biggest developments was the return of Kai Sotto after a two-year absence from the national team. The Filipino big man quickly regained his place in the rotation, averaging 15.5 points and 15 rebounds over two games while strengthening Gilas’ presence inside the paint.

Dwight Ramos also provided consistency, averaging 15 points, six rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.5 steals during the window.

Against Jordan, Gilas had to overcome a double-digit deficit. CJ Perez helped lead the comeback with 16 points and five rebounds, while Kevin Quiambao contributed 14 points, five rebounds, and two assists. Quiambao also connected on a crucial three-pointer that helped the Philippines secure the one-point victory.

The team once again rallied against Iran, with Juan Gomez de Liaño delivering 16 points and three rebounds in another come-from-behind performance.

The victory over Iran carried historical significance as well. The Iranians defeated the Philippines in the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship final at the same venue.

Filipino fans continued to show confidence in the national team. According to ArenaPlus, 74.4 percent of its total bet count backed the Philippines against Jordan, while 71.1 percent supported Gilas against Iran.

With Sotto back in action and several local players stepping up, Gilas leaves the fourth qualifying window with renewed momentum and greater confidence in the depth of its roster.
