Empowering Women: SM Supermalls’ 5th International Women’s Day Summit Celebrates Inclusion and Leadership

On March 7, 2025, SM Aura’s Samsung Hall became a hub of empowerment as SM Supermalls hosted its 5th Annual International Women’s Day Summit, themed “Women Inspiring Women.” The free event brought together a dynamic mix of thought leaders, industry experts, and advocates, all united in advancing gender inclusivity.

Inspiring Voices, Impactful Conversations

Moderated by Karen Davila, United Nations (UN) Women National Goodwill Ambassador, the summit tackled key issues shaping women’s experiences today. Conversations spanned across technology, workplace safety, business, beauty, and e-commerce, offering practical insights and inspiration.

A lineup of 15 influential women shared their expertise, including BDO Brand Ambassador Small Laude, who emphasized the importance of financial literacy for women, and Dr. Rica Cruz, a leading voice in sexual wellness, who discussed the journey behind her women-focused app, Unprude.

SM Group Sustainability Champion Jessica Bianca Sy delivers a talk on Safe Working Spaces for Women, underlining the importance of creating supportive environments for women in the workplace.

Forbes 30 Under 30 awardee Amanda Cua, founder of BackScoop, detailed her experiences in tech, while Ana Lorenzana de Ocampo, CEO of Wildflour Hospitality Group, offered advice to aspiring female entrepreneurs. Jessica Bianca Sy, SM Group’s Sustainability Champion, shed light on creating safe and inclusive workspaces for women.

The conversation extended to beauty industry leader Jacqe Gutierrez, who shared the growth stories of BLK and Happy Skin, and author Gina Consing-McAdam, who highlighted the transformative power of writing and publishing.

Championing Women in Leadership and Innovation

Other prominent speakers included PCW Chairperson Ermelita Valdeavilla, DTI Undersecretary Blesila Lantayona, Connected Women co-founder Gina Romero, Isabela City Mayor Sitti Djalia Hataman, Canon Europe Ambassador Chiara Negrello, Canva PH Marketing and Growth Lead Maisie Littaua, and Canva Southeast Asia Regional Lead Yani Hornilla-Donato.

A heartfelt tribute was given by Bledes Fores-Legarda of Cibo, honoring her late sister, Chef Margarita Fores, while Manila Bulletin Executive Director Pinky Colmenares added her perspective on media and women’s empowerment.

A key highlight was the panel discussion on “Women and Artificial Intelligence (AI),” which explored how AI is reshaping opportunities for women in various industries.

AI and Women’s Empowerment in Focus

Beyond discussions, the summit featured a striking photo exhibit, “Silent Shift – AI to Empower Women in the Philippines Beyond Traditional Limits”, by Chiara Negrello. Held at the Samsung Hall Lobby, the exhibit was a collaboration between SM Supermalls, Aboitiz Foundation, Canon, and Connected Women, illustrating how AI can break barriers for women.

A Movement, Not Just an Event

The summit reinforced SM Supermalls’ long-standing commitment to gender inclusivity. In his opening remarks, SM Supermalls President Steven Tan shared, “At SM Supermalls, we believe in the power of women to drive change. With 65% of our workforce and the majority of our leadership team being women, we champion women not just in March, but all year round.”

He added that SM’s celebration of women extends beyond the summit, with initiatives like Sining Filipina, leadership forums with LGUs, UN Women, and PCW, and wellness activities like the Women’s Run, which welcomed over 8,000 participants, including Filipina CEOs.
