Ten years may seem like a short chapter in the life of an institution, but for the men and women of the Philippine Navy, a decade can mean stronger support systems, better healthcare, and greater confidence in carrying out their mission. At Naval Station Leovigildo Gantioqui (NSLG) in San Antonio, Zambales, one facility has quietly played a vital role in that journey—the NSLG Medical Dispensary.
Since its renovation through the support of SM Foundation in December 2016, the dispensary has become more than just a healthcare facility. It has evolved into an essential partner in safeguarding the health and well-being of naval personnel, trainees, their families, and even members of nearby communities.
Nearly a decade after its refurbishment, the dispensary continues to provide approximately 18,000 medical services annually. These include physical examinations, immunizations, consultations, treatment of common illnesses, and care for injuries sustained during military training. The facility serves as a frontline healthcare provider, ensuring that personnel remain healthy, mission-ready, and capable of fulfilling their responsibilities.
For many trainees, access to immediate medical attention can make a significant difference in their military careers. Female Sailor Candidate Rochelle Nuestro of Philippine Navy Class 75 experienced this firsthand after suffering an injury during training. What could have become a major setback was addressed quickly through the medical dispensary’s prompt intervention and professional care.
“Kung wala ‘yung dispensary, for sure, wala na ako dito kasi ‘yung accident ko, napunan agad siya because of the dispensary kaya hindi siya lumala nang sobra,” she shared.
Her experience highlights the importance of having quality medical services readily available. Through immediate first aid, diagnostic procedures, fracture management, and follow-up care, the dispensary helped ensure that an injury did not become the end of a promising naval career.
The impact of SM Foundation’s partnership with the Philippine Navy extends far beyond Zambales. Over the years, the foundation has also supported the renovation and modernization of several medical and dental dispensaries across the country.
In Lapu-Lapu City, the Naval Base Rafael Ramos Medical and Dental Dispensary was transformed into a more modern facility capable of providing expanded outpatient, radiology, laboratory, and dental services. In Puerto Princesa City, the Naval Station Apolinario Jalandoon Medical Dispensary was revitalized to better serve both military personnel and nearby communities, particularly those in underserved areas. Meanwhile, in Legazpi City, the Naval Station Julhasan Arasain Medical and Dental Dispensary underwent improvements that enhanced patient flow, operational efficiency, and overall healthcare delivery.
These developments have helped bring quality healthcare closer to those who serve the nation. Improved facilities allow for faster and more efficient treatment while supporting higher standards of medical care and helping facilities meet accreditation requirements from government healthcare agencies.
Rear Admiral Karl Decapia, PN, underscored the value of these improvements in strengthening the Navy’s healthcare capabilities.
“SM Foundation has given us years of free maintenance of the medical dispensary. It’s a huge help for NETC. It paved the way for improved medical services,” he said.
His statement reflects how healthcare investments contribute directly to operational readiness. Healthy personnel are better prepared to undergo rigorous training, perform demanding duties, and respond effectively to national security requirements.
Beyond upgraded buildings and equipment, the true impact of these projects can be measured through the lives they touch every day. For countless sailors, trainees, and family members, the dispensaries provide reassurance that quality care is available whenever it is needed.
For Rochelle Nuestro and many others like her, the NSLG Medical Dispensary represents far more than a healthcare facility. It symbolizes hope, recovery, and the opportunity to continue pursuing dreams of service to the country.
