Bridging the Gap: Turning TechVoc Scholars into Industry Builders

Scholars and partners formalize the Upskill-to-Work program at Tagaytay Highlands. By aligning technical-vocational training with industry-demand skills, the program empowers the youth to become active drivers of economic growth.

SM Foundation is expanding its education initiatives beyond traditional college scholarships by providing underserved Filipino youth with practical skills training that leads directly to employment.

Through its new Upskill-to-Work Scholarship Program, the foundation launched its first two industry tracks in August, creating a pathway that takes participants from technical training and certification to full-time jobs within the SM Group and its partner companies.

Built around the principle “Aral ngayon, trabaho bukas,” the program responds to a common challenge among young jobseekers: available employment opportunities do not always match the skills or certifications they possess.

The pioneer batch of Upskill-to-Work scholars gathers at the SM Retail Headquarters in Pasay City. This milestone marks their first step toward securing full-time employment and becoming productive contributors to the country’s vibrant retail economy.

Instead of providing training without a defined employment destination, the initiative begins by identifying the actual manpower requirements of participating SM business units. Scholars are then trained specifically for those positions, with participating companies committing to employment opportunities for successful graduates.

The first track was launched on August 17 in partnership with Highlands Prime Inc. (HPI) and Costa del Hamilo Inc. (CDHI) at Tagaytay Highlands. It focuses on construction and electrical trades, preparing scholars for work supporting projects under the two companies.

Training is being conducted through Don Bosco One TVET Technical-Vocational School, a TESDA-certified institution. Employment opportunities will be provided through participating contractors FMJ Marketing & Electrical Services, Jethrock Construction Corporation, Megabuilders & Building Care Services Corp., Radja Builders & Enterprise, and Rizhle Construction & Development Corporation.

SM Retail Vice President for Human Resources Maria Teresa Portillo orients the scholars on retail customer service. By learning directly from corporate practitioners, these youth are equipped with the key competencies needed to thrive and contribute immediately upon deployment.

SM Foundation Executive Director for Education Linda Atayde said the initiative was developed after recognizing a segment of young Filipinos who are unable to attend college and have difficulty finding employment because they lack the necessary skills and formal certifications.

While SM Foundation currently supports around 3,500 college scholars studying in more than 200 colleges and universities nationwide, the new program broadens its educational reach to young people seeking alternative routes into the workforce.

SM Foundation trustee Arlene Keh encouraged participants to pursue their ambitions while developing the discipline and perseverance necessary to succeed professionally.

Beyond technical instruction, scholars are also introduced to leadership and teamwork. Each class elects a “beadle,” who helps lead discussions and keeps fellow scholars engaged throughout their training.

A second employment track was launched on August 24 with SM Retail at its headquarters in Pasay City. Its first batch consists of 19 scholars undertaking an intensive two-month program leading to a TESDA-accredited NC II Retail Customer Service Certification.

SM Retail’s HR and Training team will conduct the training, with successful scholars offered employment and deployment to SM Retail stores across Metro Manila.

SM Retail Senior Vice President for Human Resources Leny Hernandez emphasized the importance of drive, enthusiasm, grit, continuous learning, and developing a positive attitude toward work.

The first nationwide batch of the Upskill-to-Work Scholarship Program offers more than 260 scholarship slots through partnerships with SM Retail, SM Development Corporation, Highlands Prime, Costa del Hamilo, Goldilocks, and Brownies.

By connecting training directly with industry demand, the program aims to give underserved young Filipinos more than a certificate. It provides them with a practical starting point for employment, professional growth, and a more secure future.
