A Rising Game Takes Center Stage

Mackonner Dy at play in SM City Marikina Pickleball Courts

The unmistakable sound of paddles striking balls echoed through SM City Marikina as a new kind of sporting energy took over the mall. What began as a simple anniversary celebration for SM Active Hub quickly transformed into a vibrant showcase of one of today’s fastest-growing sports—pickleball.

At the heart of the excitement was Canadian national champion Mackonner Dy, whose presence brought both inspiration and anticipation to local players and spectators alike. At just 16, Dy has already carved out an impressive reputation on the international stage, blending agility, strategy, and composure well beyond his age. His visit to the Philippines signaled more than just a tour—it marked a meaningful exchange between global talent and a rapidly expanding local community.

A welcome ceremony held for Mackonner Dy (center) was led by SM Supermalls AVP for Marketing Jay Aranas (left), Area Marketing OIC Ma-ann Hipol (3rd from right), Regional Marketing Head Khristine Lenon (2nd from right), SM City Marikina Mall Manager Francis Brian Cruz (5th from left) and representatives from Paloo PH and SM City Marikina team.

The Marikina stop served as the opening chapter of a multi-mall roadshow, drawing a diverse crowd of enthusiasts, from seasoned players to curious first-timers eager to experience the sport firsthand. Organized in collaboration with SM Supermalls and community partners like Paloo PH, the event highlighted how shared passion and accessible venues are fueling pickleball’s rise across the country.

Beyond the matches and meet-and-greet moments, Dy shared insights into why pickleball continues to win people over. Its simplicity makes it easy to pick up, while its fast-paced rallies keep players engaged—creating a balance of fun, fitness, and social connection. For many attendees, the experience reinforced how the sport fits seamlessly into everyday lifestyles, especially with more dedicated courts now available in familiar spaces like malls.

The roadshow continues across key locations, including SM Center Muntinlupa, SM Southmall, SM North EDSA, SM City Bicutan, and SM City Sta. Mesa, extending the celebration and inviting more communities to take part. Each stop builds on the same goal: to make movement more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

As SM Active Hub marks its first year, the initiative proves that malls can be more than shopping destinations—they can be spaces where communities come together, discover new passions, and stay active in ways that feel both exciting and inclusive.
