A New Wave of Hope: High-Tech Catamaran Joins Manila Bay Cleanup

Manila Bay’s fight against pollution just gained a powerful new ally—a high-tech catamaran trash boat. This latest addition, donated by SM Prime Holdings (SM Prime) in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), marks another milestone in the ongoing efforts to restore the bay’s ecological balance.

On January 31, DENR officially received the 30-foot catamaran, complete with advanced navigation tools and cleaning equipment. Tasked to the DENR Metropolitan Environmental Office – South Zone, the boat will significantly boost the agency’s capacity to remove floating waste, ensuring a cleaner and healthier marine ecosystem.

The 30-foot catamaran is designed to efficiently collect and carry up to 1 ton of waste.

“This catamaran symbolizes our dedication to environmental stewardship and the power of collaboration in building a sustainable future,” said SM Supermalls Vice President Engr. Liza Silerio. SM Prime’s support aligns with DENR’s broader initiatives, including the Parañaque Adopt-a-River project, reinforcing the importance of joint efforts in environmental conservation.

The presence of DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga and other officials underscored the agency’s commitment to leveraging partnerships to tackle pollution. The catamaran’s deployment serves as a model for how public-private collaboration can drive meaningful environmental change.

As the catamaran sets sail on its mission, it represents more than just a cleanup tool—it’s a beacon of hope for the future of Manila Bay, proving that collective action can turn the tide in the fight against pollution.
