In the heart of Binondo, a place long defined by devotion and history welcomed a new chapter as the Felicidad T. Sy Pastoral and Youth Center was formally blessed and unveiled on March 27, just days before Holy Week. Situated within the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, the new facility stands on sacred ground that has witnessed centuries of faith, tracing its roots back to 1596.
The redevelopment marks a significant transformation of a structure that had served the parish since the late 1960s but had since deteriorated over time. Led by the Felicidad T. Sy Foundation Inc., the project reimagined the space into a modern four-story center designed to support both clergy and community. More than a physical upgrade, it represents a renewed commitment to nurturing spiritual life in one of Manila’s oldest districts.
The blessing ceremony was led by Jose F. Cardinal Advincula, joined by parish leaders and members of the Sy family. In his message, the Cardinal described the center as more than a building, calling it a “sacred space” where healing, fraternity, and communion can flourish. His words reflected the deeper purpose of the project—to create an environment where both spiritual reflection and human connection can thrive.
For parish priest Msgr. Esteban Lo, the impact is both immediate and practical. The new facility offers improved working conditions, including private office spaces and more organized areas for daily parish operations—an upgrade from the previously cramped setup. The enhanced environment is also expected to encourage greater participation from youth groups, who now have dedicated spaces for formation, gatherings, and creative expression.
Visitors are welcomed into a thoughtfully designed reception area, now air-conditioned and more accommodating, making everyday interactions within the parish more comfortable. These improvements reflect a broader vision of accessibility—ensuring that the Church remains open and responsive to the needs of its community.
The center also carries a deeply personal significance for the Sy family, embodying the values of Felicidad “Nanang” Sy. As shared by Hans Sy, her life was a testament to faith, generosity, and service without expectation. These principles guided the creation of the center, turning it into a living legacy of compassion.
Echoing this sentiment, Teresita Sy-Coson emphasized the goal of strengthening the Church as a place not just for worship, but for genuine community. Designed as a multi-purpose hub, the center now serves as a residence for priests and a space for youth, choirs, and altar servers.
More than architecture, the Felicidad T. Sy Pastoral and Youth Center stands as a sanctuary—one that invites reflection, fosters connection, and ensures that faith remains present in the everyday lives of the people it serves.
