A brighter 2025 for Filipinos: SM Prime evolves with renewable energy

SM North EDSA is operational with a 1.5MWp solar energy system since 2014.

In a world increasingly affected by climate change, finding sustainable energy solutions has become a global priority. The Philippines, blessed with abundant sunlight year-round, stands as a prime location to harness solar energy. In 2024, Manila alone experienced approximately 4,440 hours of daylight, presenting a remarkable opportunity to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and mitigate environmental harm through solar power.

Recognizing this potential, SM Prime took an early lead in integrating renewable energy into its operations. As early as 2014, SM North EDSA installed Southeast Asia’s largest rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system at the time. This pioneering step underscored the company’s long-term vision of adopting clean energy solutions while reducing its carbon footprint and environmental impact.

SM City Santa Rosa adopts a 3.17MWp solar energy system in 2023, reinforcing its commitment to clean energy.

Steven Tan, SM Supermalls President, reflects on this transformative journey: “Our environmental sustainability initiatives began with energy and water conservation. By integrating renewable energy into our operations, we strengthen our commitment to protecting both people and the planet.” This philosophy has since shaped SM Prime’s ambitious energy transformation strategy.

Today, SM Supermalls boasts solar PV systems in 44 of its malls across the country, generating a peak capacity of 51.6 megawatts (MW). With over 96,000 solar panels installed on rooftops spanning 33 hectares, SM Prime holds the distinction of having the largest solar energy portfolio in the Philippines. The most extensive installation is located at SM City Santa Rosa, reflecting the company’s push to lead in sustainable practices.

SM City Urdaneta Central in Pangasinan powers its operations with a 0.89MWp solar energy system, fully operational in 2023.

This massive solar energy initiative not only curbs carbon emissions but also provides clean energy equivalent to powering thousands of homes or taking numerous vehicles off the road. By reducing dependence on coal and other fossil fuels, SM Prime significantly contributes to environmental conservation while benefiting the local communities it serves.

SM Mall of Asia (MOA) Square boasts a 2MWp solar energy system, reducing its environmental impact and contributing to a greener future.

The solar power generated is directly utilized to run essential mall functions, such as lighting, air conditioning, and escalators. This reliance on renewable energy not only minimizes SM Supermalls’ dependence on the national power grid but also enhances energy stability, reducing the likelihood of blackouts and easing the load on electricity providers. The company’s proactive shift underscores its commitment to energy security and environmental stewardship.

SM City Cabanatuan harnesses the power of the sun with a 0.413MWp solar energy system, powering the mall with clean energy.

Beyond solar energy, SM Prime’s sustainability efforts include waste management, water conservation, and air quality initiatives. These integrated programs are designed to address environmental challenges while fostering innovative solutions for more responsible business practices. By prioritizing sustainability, the company positions itself as a leader in the country’s push for a greener future.

In 2023, SM City Grand Central in Caloocan activates a 1.6MWp solar energy system, enhancing its sustainability efforts.

Through its ambitious renewable energy projects and comprehensive environmental initiatives, SM Prime is transforming its operations to align with global sustainability goals. As a result, the company serves as a beacon of progress, inspiring others to join in creating a cleaner, brighter, and more sustainable Philippines.
