For graduating members of the UP Beta Sigma Fraternity, Los Baños Chapter, leaving the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) meant more than celebrating the end of their college journey. They wanted to leave behind something meaningful for the next generation.
That goal led the fraternity to rehabilitate the Child Development Laboratory (CDL) playground of the College of Human Ecology (CHE), transforming the area into an improved space where young children can play, learn, and build connections.

The project began during the fraternity’s send-off celebration, when members discussed how they could create a lasting contribution to the university community. With support from SM Foundation (SMFI), LNMD Affordable Homes, Pro Agri Seed Corporation, and other partners, the idea was turned into action.
The rehabilitated playground was formally turned over on August 14, 2026, during a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by representatives of the fraternity, CDL, UPLB CHE, SM Foundation, partner organizations, and donors.

Improvements included repainting and repairing existing playground equipment, reinforcing slides and swings, and adding a new jungle gym. The upgrades provide children with a safer and more engaging environment for active play.
For CDL Faculty-in-Charge Teacher Maris Dy, the playground serves an important role in early childhood development by giving children opportunities to move, socialize, explore, and interact with nature.
“The CDL playground is where the children can freely run, jump, climb, and slide alone and with their peers,” Dy said. “It is where they can build connections with other children and adults and with nature.”

Dy also expressed gratitude to the organizations that helped complete the rehabilitation, emphasizing that active play supports children’s physical health, brain development, social skills, and mental well-being.
For SM Foundation, supporting partnerships such as the CDL playground rehabilitation demonstrates how organizations and communities can combine resources and shared goals to create meaningful social impact.
As the graduating fraternity members prepare to leave UPLB, their contribution remains behind—a renewed playground where generations of young learners can discover, play, build friendships, and grow.
