As cybercriminals continue to develop new ways to deceive consumers, Globe is reinforcing its commitment to protecting customers through a comprehensive and evolving cybersecurity strategy.
The telecommunications provider recognizes that the battle against digital fraud is constantly changing. While significant progress has been made in reducing traditional scams such as spoofed text messages, fraudulent links, and SIM-related schemes, scammers are continuously adjusting their methods to bypass security controls and reach unsuspecting victims.
According to Garrett Silao, Globe’s Chief Information Security Officer, cybercriminals are highly adaptive and often shift their tactics whenever existing scam channels become more difficult to exploit. This reality underscores the need for continuous vigilance and innovation rather than relying on a single security solution.
Over the years, Globe has implemented various measures designed to safeguard its network and customers. These include strengthening enterprise sender identification systems, blocking malicious websites and links, detecting unauthorized SIM box activities, and utilizing advanced network analytics to identify suspicious behavior. These initiatives have helped reduce the prevalence of SMS-based scams that previously affected millions of mobile subscribers.
However, as security measures become more effective, cybercriminals have started exploring more sophisticated technologies. Among the emerging threats are illegal IMSI Catchers, commonly referred to as fake cell towers. These devices imitate legitimate cellular infrastructure and broadcast stronger signals to lure nearby mobile phones into connecting to them.
Unlike conventional text-message scams that operate within messaging platforms, IMSI Catchers exploit vulnerabilities at the network level. By impersonating legitimate cell sites, these devices can potentially intercept communications and bypass some traditional security mechanisms. Their emergence demonstrates how cybercriminals continue to evolve alongside advancements in cybersecurity.
To address these increasingly complex threats, Globe has adopted a multi-layered defense strategy. The company combines network security technologies, real-time threat intelligence, strategic partnerships, and public awareness initiatives to create a more resilient protection framework.
Globe works closely with enterprise clients to secure authorized messaging channels and prevent misuse. The company also actively blocks known phishing sites and collaborates with banks, government agencies, regulators, and law enforcement organizations to share intelligence and respond more effectively to emerging cyber threats.
Beyond technological safeguards, Globe continues to invest heavily in consumer education. Through programs such as Go Safe with Globe, Scam Shield on the GlobeOne app, customer advisories, and digital literacy campaigns, the company seeks to empower users with the knowledge needed to identify and avoid fraudulent activities.
Silao emphasized that while technology serves as a critical line of defense, public awareness remains equally important. Educated consumers are less likely to fall victim to deceptive schemes, making it more difficult for scammers to succeed.
As digital threats continue to evolve, Globe remains focused on strengthening its cybersecurity capabilities while encouraging customers to stay alert. The company advises users to exercise caution when receiving unexpected messages, requests for personal information, or offers that create pressure to act immediately. Customers are also encouraged to report suspicious activity through official channels to help prevent others from becoming victims.
Through ongoing investments, industry collaboration, and public education, Globe aims to stay ahead of emerging scam tactics and provide safer digital experiences for Filipinos.
