Manulife Philippines Strengthens Leadership Team with New General Counsel

Manulife Philippines has announced the appointment of Edgar Tordesillas as its new General Counsel, effective July 1, 2026, reinforcing the company’s focus on strong governance, regulatory compliance, and sustainable business growth. As part of his new role, Tordesillas will join the company’s executive committee and provide strategic legal guidance to support key business decisions and long-term objectives.

A seasoned legal professional, Tordesillas brings more than two decades of experience in the Philippine financial services industry, particularly in life insurance and asset management. His extensive background includes leadership roles in legal, compliance, and corporate governance, making him well-equipped to navigate the increasingly complex regulatory environment facing financial institutions today.

The appointment also marks a homecoming for Tordesillas. Earlier in his career, he served as Vice President for Legal and Compliance at Manulife Philippines from 2007 to 2011. His return brings valuable institutional knowledge and familiarity with the company’s culture, operations, and strategic direction.

Before rejoining Manulife, Tordesillas spent 14 years as General Counsel for another multinational life insurance company, where he advised senior executives on legal and regulatory matters. His responsibilities included overseeing corporate governance, managing litigation and dispute resolution, negotiating contracts, and ensuring compliance with industry regulations.

In his new position, Tordesillas will play a key role in helping the organization identify and manage legal risks while supporting strategic initiatives across the business. He will work closely with senior leaders to ensure that operational and corporate decisions remain aligned with legal requirements and sound risk management principles.

Manulife Philippines President and Chief Executive Officer Rahul Hora emphasized that Tordesillas’ extensive experience and leadership capabilities will be valuable as the company continues to strengthen governance and pursue growth opportunities. He noted that a strong understanding of the regulatory landscape is essential in helping the organization manage risk while delivering value to customers and stakeholders.

For Tordesillas, the opportunity to return to Manulife represents both a professional milestone and a chance to contribute to the company’s future success. He expressed his commitment to supporting the organization’s growth while maintaining high standards of integrity, accountability, and governance.

With his appointment, Manulife Philippines continues to reinforce its leadership team as it advances its commitment to responsible growth and customer-focused financial services.
