Guarding Trust Through Data Privacy

As businesses continue to embrace digital transformation, protecting personal information has become more important than ever. Recognizing the value of responsible data management, SM Retail has strengthened its commitment to data privacy, earning fresh recognition from the National Privacy Commission (NPC) during the recent National Data Privacy Conference.

The retail arm of the SM Group received the NPC Seal of Registration Compliance Excellence Award for the Private Sector, an honor given to organizations that demonstrate transparency, accountability, and strong adherence to data privacy standards. The award highlights companies that prominently display their NPC Seal of Registration across physical operations and digital platforms, reinforcing public confidence in how personal information is handled.

For SM Retail, the recognition reflects years of continuous effort to embed privacy and data protection into its corporate culture. According to SM Retail President Jonathan Ng, safeguarding customer information remains essential in building and maintaining trust among consumers. He emphasized that the achievement was made possible through the collaboration of various business units working together to strengthen privacy compliance and awareness throughout the organization.

Beyond the award, SM Retail was also named a finalist for the Privacy Initiative of the Year category. The recognition underscores the company’s ongoing investment in employee education through specialized learning modules, training sessions, and privacy awareness programs. These initiatives are designed to help employees understand the responsible handling of personal information using practical examples relevant to the retail industry.

Adding to the company’s accomplishments, Data Protection Officer Leyson San Juan was recognized as a finalist for Data Protection Officer of the Year for the second straight year. The distinction highlights his continued leadership in advancing privacy practices and strengthening data governance within the organization.

These latest achievements build on SM Retail’s previous recognition as a recipient of the Privacy Management Program Award, further solidifying its position as a leader in responsible data protection.

The awards were presented during Privacy Awareness Week in Parañaque City, an annual campaign led by the NPC to promote data privacy awareness and encourage responsible processing of personal information across the country. Through these recognitions, SM Retail continues to demonstrate that protecting customer data is not only a compliance requirement but also a key pillar of trust and corporate responsibility.
