Where Learning Begins at Home

In many Filipino homes today, the most important classroom no longer exists inside a school building. It can be found beside a window, tucked into a bedroom corner, or built into a shared family space — a simple study area where children attend online classes, finish assignments, read books, and quietly prepare for the future.

Recognizing the growing role of home environments in shaping a child’s learning habits, SM Home is turning attention toward the importance of purposeful study spaces through “Start Smart for School,” the latest edition of the SM Home Masterclass happening on May 22 at SM Home Megamall.

This year’s program moves beyond the traditional back-to-school checklist of notebooks, gadgets, and uniforms. Instead, it focuses on how thoughtful design choices inside the home can help children stay organized, motivated, and mentally prepared for learning.

The initiative reflects a growing understanding among parents that learning is influenced not only by teaching methods, but also by the environment surrounding a child every day. A stable desk, proper lighting, accessible storage, and a dedicated space for studying can all contribute to improved focus and healthier routines.

Leading the discussion is Mariel Martinez, a licensed speech-language pathologist from the University of the Philippines Manila and founder of BOOST Therapy Center in Makati. Through years of working closely with Filipino families, Martinez has seen how consistency and ownership over personal spaces can shape a child’s confidence, behavior, and readiness to learn.

Widely recognized online through Project Playtime and her educational #EducReels content, Martinez advocates practical solutions that parents can realistically apply at home. Her participation in the Masterclass highlights how even small adjustments — such as reducing clutter or creating predictable routines — can positively affect a child’s concentration and communication skills.

Complementing the developmental discussion, SM Home will present practical furniture and organizational solutions designed specifically for modern Filipino households, where space is often shared and multifunctional.

Featured items include study desks like the Moment Study Table and Easy Study Desk, along with storage pieces such as the Hosh Study Shelf and Mallow Display Rack that encourage children to organize their own materials independently. The setups aim to show families that functional learning spaces do not require expensive renovations or large homes — only intentional planning.

Lighting and comfort also form an important part of the conversation. Rechargeable lamps such as the Lunarx and Vista table lamps are highlighted for their convenience, particularly in homes with flexible room arrangements or changing schedules. Ergonomic chairs and supportive cushions are likewise introduced to help students remain comfortable during longer study sessions.

Beyond furniture, the Masterclass also explores how smaller details — organizers, baskets, desktop systems, and calming home accents — can influence a child’s daily habits and sense of responsibility.

According to SM Home Business Unit Head Janice T. Yang, the campaign centers on building spaces that encourage children to engage more confidently with learning.

The event will also feature “The Baon System” with bento mom Nikki Garcia, offering parents practical ideas for managing school-day routines and meal preparation more efficiently.

“Start Smart for School” takes place on May 22, 2026, at SM Home Megamall and launches a month-long back-to-school campaign across participating SM Home branches nationwide, featuring discounts on selected school and study essentials. Through the program, SM Home continues to position the home not just as a place of comfort, but as a space where learning and growth can thrive every day.
