Healing Beyond Borders

Healthcare becomes more meaningful when it reaches the people who need it most, especially beyond the walls of hospitals and clinics. This spirit of service was once again highlighted as the AMA School of Medicine (AMASOM) joined the latest leg of the “Lab for All” initiative led by First Lady Louise Araneta Marcos at Camp Crame on May 5, 2026.

The nationwide program continues to expand access to essential healthcare services for Filipinos by bringing medical consultations, laboratory assistance, and government support closer to communities. Through the initiative, thousands of individuals are given opportunities to receive healthcare services that may otherwise remain inaccessible because of financial or logistical challenges.

For AMASOM, participating in the outreach activity reflected more than institutional support for a national healthcare program. It reinforced the school’s deeper mission of forming future doctors who understand that medicine is rooted not only in science and clinical expertise, but also in compassion, empathy, and public service.

During the Camp Crame deployment, the medical school contributed to healthcare services provided to around 1,500 members of the Philippine National Police and their dependents. The activity served as recognition for the sacrifices made by uniformed personnel who dedicate themselves to protecting communities while often placing the needs of others ahead of their own.

Leading the AMA delegation was Dr. Amable R. Aguiluz V, founder and chairman emeritus of the AMA Education System, whose long-standing advocacy for education and nation-building continues to influence the institution’s direction. His participation reflected AMA’s support for collaborative healthcare efforts that connect educational institutions with public service initiatives.

The event also gathered several government agencies and partner institutions, creating a multi-sector effort focused on wellness and community care. Representatives from the Department of Health, PhilHealth, TESDA, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Agriculture, Pag-IBIG Fund, and the Public Attorney’s Office participated in the program, demonstrating how cooperation among agencies can strengthen services for ordinary Filipinos.

Beyond the medical assistance provided, the atmosphere of the event highlighted the importance of human connection in healthcare. AMASOM faculty members, students, and volunteers worked closely with patients while also gaining firsthand experience in community-based medicine. For many medical students, activities like Lab for All become valuable learning opportunities that expose them to realities outside the classroom and remind them why they chose the profession in the first place.

The outreach program also emphasized the value of service-driven education. By allowing students to assist experienced doctors during medical missions and consultations, AMASOM continues to shape future healthcare professionals who combine technical competence with compassion and social responsibility.

As Lab for All continues to visit more communities nationwide, AMASOM remains committed to supporting initiatives that place people’s welfare at the center of healthcare. The institution’s participation reflects its belief that medicine should not only heal illnesses, but also restore dignity, hope, and care to every Filipino life it touches.

Through programs anchored on service and humanity, AMA continues to uphold its guiding principle of “Love for All,” proving that education and healthcare can work together to create meaningful change for communities across the country.
