The magic of Japanese cinema is back on the big screen as the Japanese Film Festival (JFF) returns to the Philippines this October 2025, bringing a rich tapestry of stories that transcend time, culture, and imagination. Organized by the Japan Foundation, Manila, this year’s festival features 12 carefully curated films, now showing at SM City Manila until October 26, 2025 — with free admission for all screenings.
Launched in 1997, JFF has grown into one of the most anticipated cultural events in the Philippines, drawing tens of thousands of moviegoers annually. It is now recognized as the largest Japanese film festival in the world, continuing its mission to celebrate artistic excellence and deepen cultural connections through cinema.
This year’s theme, “Bridg(e)ing,” reflects the festival’s goal to connect the old with the new, tradition with innovation, and people across generations. The lineup serves as a cinematic bridge between worlds — from love and loss to fantasy and futurism — reminding audiences that film remains a powerful medium to unite hearts and cultures.
Kicking off the festival is the 4K remaster of Shunji Iwai’s iconic film “Love Letter” (1995), a poetic exploration of memory and longing that continues to captivate audiences nearly three decades after its release. Its emotional depth finds a modern echo in “18×2 Beyond Youthful Days” (2024), a Taiwan-Japan co-production inspired by Iwai’s storytelling style.
The JFF 2025 lineup offers an exceptional mix of classics and contemporary masterpieces, including Akira Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai” (1956), “Ghost in the Shell” (1995), and Hayao Miyazaki’s “Spirited Away” (2001). New releases such as “A Samurai in Time” (2024), “Cells at Work!” (live-action, 2024), and “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom” (2024) promise to delight both long-time fans and new viewers alike.
After touring SM City Baguio, Cebu, Lanang, and Clark, the festival now takes center stage in Manila, wrapping up a nationwide celebration of Japanese artistry. Supported by the Film Development Council of the Philippines, SM Cinema, JTI Philippines, Theo and Philo, and the Embassy of Japan, JFF 2025 invites everyone to experience the beauty of cinematic storytelling that bridges cultures and generations.
