In a collaborative effort to preserve one of the Philippines’ most treasured landmarks, German cleaning technology leader Kärcher has partnered with the Intramuros Administration (IA) to undertake a restorative cleaning project at Fort Santiago. This initiative is part of Kärcher’s global commitment to heritage conservation, coinciding with its 90th-anniversary celebration, which includes 90 cleaning projects worldwide in 2025.
The project focused on cleaning the reconstructed main gate and the wall façades of Baluartillo de San Miguel and Medio Baluarte de San Francisco. Utilizing advanced cleaning technology, Kärcher aimed to remove biological growth and environmental contaminants while preserving the historical integrity of the centuries-old structure. IA personnel, trained by Kärcher’s experts, assisted in the process, ensuring the safe and efficient application of cleaning methods.
Innovative Cleaning for Historical Preservation
Kärcher employed its cutting-edge hot water high-pressure cleaners in steam mode, operating at a low-pressure range of 0.5-1 bar and a temperature of 95°C. This technique effectively eliminates dirt and organic growth while preventing future deterioration by eradicating biological residues embedded within the stone. By using non-invasive methods, Kärcher ensures that Fort Santiago’s surfaces remain undamaged while being restored to their original grandeur.
“Preserving cultural heritage is at the heart of our mission,” said Darwin Bañez, General Manager of Kärcher Philippines. “Through our partnership with the Intramuros Administration, we honor the legacy of Fort Santiago and the resilience of the Filipino people.”
A Historic Symbol of Filipino Heritage
Built in 1571 by Spanish navigator Miguel López de Legazpi, Fort Santiago has served as a strategic military fortress throughout Philippine history. It has witnessed colonial rule, wartime struggles, and the nation’s fight for independence. Today, it stands as a national monument, drawing thousands of visitors who explore its storied past.
The Intramuros Administration, an agency under the Department of Tourism, oversees Fort Santiago’s conservation as part of its broader mission to restore and develop the historic walled city of Manila. IA continues to implement cultural preservation, tourism promotion, and property development programs to maintain Intramuros as a living testament to the country’s Hispanic heritage.
