Every blood donation begins with a simple decision, but its impact can reach far beyond what donors may ever know. For thousands of patients across the country, a single bag of blood can mean another chance at life. This belief continues to inspire SM Foundation as it strengthens its long-running blood donation program in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) and the Department of Health–Philippine Blood Center.
Among the volunteers is Judy Jr. Diaz, Cost Manager from the Cost Management Group of SM EDD, whose journey as a donor started from a deeply personal experience. Once fearful of needles, Diaz never imagined he would become a regular blood donor. That changed when a sibling became seriously ill and urgently needed blood. Witnessing how vital blood donations were during that difficult time motivated him to overcome his fear and make a commitment to help others facing similar situations.

Today, Diaz willingly joins SM Foundation’s blood donation drives, believing that his small act can make a life-changing difference.
“Masaya ako na sa simpleng pagdo-donate ng dugo, maaari tayong makatulong na makapagligtas ng buhay. Sana mas marami pang mag-volunteer, dahil hindi natin alam kung kailan tayo o ang ating mga mahal sa buhay ang mangangailangan ng dugo,” he shared.
His experience reflects the reality of many Filipino families, who often recognize the value of blood donation only when a loved one requires an urgent transfusion. By donating regularly, volunteers help ensure that lifesaving blood is available even before emergencies happen.

The Philippine Red Cross continues to stress the importance of maintaining a healthy blood supply, especially as demand often increases during accidents, medical procedures, natural disasters, and treatments for patients with chronic illnesses.
“Importanteng magkaroon tayo ng mga ganitong events kasi, number one, nakakatulong ito sa supply ng dugo. Definitely, nakaka-save ito ng buhay,” said Dr. Olivia Manalad, Medical Officer of the Philippine Red Cross. She noted that blood reserves can quickly run low during emergencies, making regular donation drives an essential part of the country’s healthcare system.

For the past 15 years, SM Foundation has remained committed to supporting this mission by encouraging volunteerism and expanding access to blood donation activities nationwide. Since launching its blood donation initiative in September 2011, the Foundation has partnered with the Philippine Red Cross and the Department of Health–Philippine Blood Center to strengthen the country’s blood reserves.
The program has collected more than 40,000 bags of blood through nationwide donation drives, each carrying the potential to save multiple lives. During the first half of 2026 alone, SM Foundation organized 40 blood donation activities, generating 1,317 bags of blood through its continuing partnerships.
According to Dalfhen Samson, SM Foundation Health and Medical Programs Project Manager, every donation creates an opportunity to help several patients.
“Sa bawat dugong inyong ibinibigay, may tatlong buhay kayong nadurugtungan,” Samson said.
Beyond the numbers, the Foundation hopes to cultivate a lasting culture of volunteer blood donation among Filipinos. Its long-term goal is to encourage more people to become regular donors, helping guarantee a safe and adequate blood supply whenever hospitals and patients need it.
“Ang long-term vision namin ay mas marami pang maging regular blood donors para masigurado na may sapat na supply ng dugo para sa lahat ng pasyente,” Samson added.
Through the dedication of volunteer donors, the support of healthcare partners, and the continued commitment of SM Foundation, every blood donation becomes more than a medical resource—it becomes a symbol of compassion, generosity, and hope. By giving blood today, ordinary individuals help ensure that someone, somewhere, will have another chance to live tomorrow.
