Academy of Sofa: A Platform for Young Designers

The top 3 Design Choice awardees for Our Home’s Academy of Sofa Interschool Design Challenge Jervis Mathew David of University of the East, Rowena Nicole Florendo and Shane Nicole Rubio of University of the Philippines Diliman with the selection committee Our Home’s VP and Business Unit Head Roy Tan, Carl Colossal President Carlos Lao, Uratex CEO Natividad Cheng and IDr Trisha Padernal.

OUR HOME proudly concludes its inaugural interschool design challenge, The Academy of Sofa, celebrating the innovation and talent of future furniture designers. What began as a small intraschool competition has evolved into a vibrant platform for collaboration among young designers.

Jervis Mathew David of University of the East received the Our Home’s Academy of Sofa Design Challenge Top Design Choice award for his Pieces Modular Sofa.

This year’s participants included students from the University of the Philippines Diliman, the University of the East, and the Philippine School of Interior Design, each bringing their unique visions to the competition.

Zephyr Sectional Sofa by Rowena Nicole Florendo of University of the Philippines Diliman is the 2nd Design Choice for Academy of Sofa.

The project’s primary goal is to nurture and showcase the potential of emerging furniture designers. By participating, students gain firsthand experience in furniture design, from conceptualization and material selection to navigating the complexities of production.

Contour Sofa by Shane Nicole Rubio of University of the Philippines Diliman is the 3rd Design Choice for Academy of Sofa.

The initiative offers them the chance to turn creative ideas into market-ready pieces. Adding to the program’s significance, OUR HOME collaborated with Carl Colossal, a partner dedicated to empowering young talents.

Together, they provided students with mentorship, hands-on experience, and the opportunity to present their designs to a broader audience. The challenge not only highlights student creativity but also bridges the gap between academic learning and the demands of the design industry.

The culmination of this journey is the Academy of Sofa exhibit, where the students’ works are on full display. Visitors can catch the exhibit at OUR HOME Megamall until December 8, 2024.

Following this, the top three designs will embark on a store caravan, appearing at OUR HOME North Edsa from December 9–15 and OUR HOME MOA from December 16–22.

Our Home’s Academy of Sofa Interschool Design Challenge top design awardees and finalists together with Our Home and Carl Colossal team. This Interschool Design Challenge initiative of Our Home aims to equip students with invaluable hands-on experience, provide them with the platform to showcase their designs to a wider audience, and an opportunity to step into the world of design and retail.

Through this initiative, OUR HOME reaffirms its commitment to fostering the next generation of designers, giving them a platform to shine and an opportunity to launch their creations into the world of retail.
