Through education, determination, and a commitment to helping others, a former SM scholar transforms his family’s future while inspiring the next generation of Filipino learners.
For many young Filipinos, completing a college education represents more than personal success. It is an opportunity to change their family’s circumstances, repay years of sacrifice, and create a brighter future for the next generation.
For Niño Carl Parado, a former beneficiary of the SM College Scholarship Program, that dream has become a meaningful reality.
Today, Niño is a Licensed Professional Teacher who not only shares his passion for Science with young learners but also helps provide financial support for his family, particularly his youngest sibling.

His journey reflects the enduring vision of SM Group founder Henry Sy, Sr., who established the scholarship program with the belief that educating one deserving student could eventually uplift an entire family.
Turning Opportunity Into Achievement
Growing up with dreams of becoming an educator, Niño understood the challenges of pursuing higher education while facing financial limitations.
Through the SM College Scholarship Program, he received the support needed to continue his studies at Visayas State University Main Campus in Baybay City, Leyte.
In August 2024, he successfully completed his Bachelor of Secondary Education degree, majoring in General Science.
His determination continued beyond graduation. After months of preparation, he passed the Licensure Examination for Teachers in June 2025, officially earning his professional teaching credentials.
Today, he serves as a Science teacher at San Lorenzo Ruiz School, Inc., a private educational institution in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.
Inside the classroom, Niño encourages students to explore scientific concepts, develop curiosity, and recognize education as a powerful instrument for personal growth.

Sharing Success With His Family
While becoming a professional teacher marked an important milestone, Niño considers his ability to support his family among his greatest accomplishments.
With his earnings, he now helps finance his youngest sibling’s education, including school supplies and daily expenses.
He also contributes to household needs and improvements to their family home.
“As soon as I began my career as a Science teacher, I took pride in supporting our youngest sibling’s education, covering his school supplies and daily needs so he can pursue his dreams without the financial struggles I once faced,” Niño shared.
For him, these responsibilities are not simply financial obligations but expressions of gratitude for the sacrifices that helped him succeed.
“I am living proof that when one is blessed, the whole family rises,” he said.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Beyond financial assistance, Niño credits SM Foundation for helping develop the discipline, compassion, resilience, and sense of responsibility that continue to influence his professional life.
As an educator, he believes teaching goes beyond explaining scientific theories and preparing students for examinations. It also involves developing character, encouraging perseverance, and inspiring young people to believe in their abilities.
He hopes to pass along the same values that helped him overcome challenges during his college years.
“Today, SM Foundation has helped shape who I am as a teacher: dedicated, compassionate, and always striving for excellence,” he shared.
Niño’s story demonstrates how one scholarship can create opportunities extending far beyond a single graduate.
What began as financial assistance for a deserving student has grown into a source of support for his family and inspiration for the children he teaches.
Through his achievements and continued commitment to giving back, Niño carries forward the vision of Henry “Tatang” Sy, Sr.—that education can create a lasting ripple effect of opportunity, hope, and positive change.
For Niño, success is not measured only by the diploma he earned or the profession he pursued, but by the lives he continues to uplift along the way.
